Greetings!
Last month, my wife and I bought an HDTV, the Sony KDF-60xs955. (A big 60 inch 16x9 proj LCD screen)
We have 2 DVD players:
The Sony NS-975V (just bought yesterday, can still return.)
A $30 Progressive Scan Component DVD player, which will be $16 after rebates and taxes.
(For the Sony, we paid the full retail $299 from a B&M store, which came to $324 after taxes)
We have the $324 Sony going through HDMI to the TV, and optical to a sound system.
We have the $16 Norcent going through 3 video RCA video components and 2 RCA audio components to the TV. We also set the screen to "Full" which gets the DVD pictures to the full 16x9.
We then started comparing some widescreen DVDs we have (some of my wife’s chick flicks, Star Wars, and Spiderman) from one player to the other. We FEEL we like the Sony more, but we are not videophiles, and when we look at specific scenes, we have a real problem specifically distinguishing what we are getting out of the big Sony that we aren't getting out of the very cheap Norcent. (Sounds pretty sad, huh?)
We know that the Sony is Upconverting, 1080i, and digital HDMI signal, while the Norcent is not upconverting, 420p, and analog component signal.
Is there a good DVD out there where we can see a "quantitative" difference between the 2 DVD players, so we don't feel like we have a gimmick player? We really like the Sony player!
Thanks so much!
Joey
