I have a Zenith L17W36 lcd TV for the bedroom, with HDTV. I moved my old DISH 6000 HDTV receiver to the bedroom after replacing it with a DISH 811 for the bigger Toshiba in the living room.

The 6000 does not have the module for HDTV so I can only get off air HDTV via an antenna. The TV has only 1 component, 2 A/V, 1 S-Video and 1 RGB. I also have a DVD recorder with component output. Using component out to the TV from the 6000 produced the occasional great HDTV PQ, but mostly poor SD PQ on the non-HDTV DISH and OFA channels. After many different connection options, I found the following to be the best and very acceptable:

I now run everything to the TV via component out from my Toshiba D-R2 DVD recorder. It seems to send everything at 480P, regardless of whether it is satellite, OFA, VCR or DVD source. I use S-Video to the DVD recorder from the 6000, and A/V from the VCR. While I don't get 1080p anymore on the few OFA HDTV programs, I'm now satisfied 100% of the time. Diagram attached.
