I am new here and can't wait to chat intelligently in all forums. I just bought a Sony 42" plasma for about $5,000. Now I have the terrible research problem of choosing between direct tv vs time warner cable's HD receiver cable. I have looked for hours online only to see articles that were written by bias individuals selling either satellites or cable. Please help. I am a huge football and hockey fan with a wonderful 5.1 surround system for dvd's. All I am looking for is the best choice for the most HD channels that suit my needs. HELP!!!!?!?!?!?!

From what I hear, HD Satellite's biggest problem is that there are no HD local channels. You need a seperate HD antenna to receive them locally via broadcast. Worst is that this causes big problems if you are trying to use an HD Direct-Tivo.
I use TWC NYC with the HD DVR box. It works very well. There arent as many channels as I'd like, but then that's going to be a problem with any service. In particular, I wish there was free HD On-Demand.
I receive all local channels (ABC NBC FOX CBS) in HD, as well as HBO SHO TNT PBS & Discovery. That's all part of my basic standard cable package. I have the option of paying $7 more to get HD ESPN and a few other stupid channels that have been bundled with it (All HD).
The DVR box does its job well. It's not as touchy-feely as a Tivo, but it can record TWO channels at once (HD or otherwise) while I play a 3rd, and it has a decent-enough program guide. Tivo is definately superior, but an HD Satellite Tivo costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000USD and is plagued with all sorts of idiotic regulartory problems. AND you need to play an extra $10 a month for the program listings. Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass.

We now have 14 HD channels available here in SW Ohio on Adelphia and from what I have heard Discovery HD is not far away.
The cable co's are starting to ramp up on HD programming. This is a fun ride!

I have a Voom Satellite system installed :smokin: and have been happy with it over the 2 months that it has been installed. They presently have the most HD channels......but that may change in the spring
