Radio shack has a 1-1/4 "heavy duty" 16 gauge,10 ft. painted (gray) mast for $15. Home Depot has a electrical conduit that is 1-1/2 for $6.18.

Obviously the emt is more than half the price and is a bigger diameter BUT you need to paint it. BUT I'm painting my brackets and cables gray anyway so its just a little bit more work.

BTW I found a great side mount bracket, intead of using those flimsy looking brackets from RS that only give you a 12" offset (the other ones might work if you need only a 6" or less offset).
How does a basketball backboard mounting bracket sound? They make universal brackets that can be mounted on a 3" pole. You just have to drill new holes for 1-1/2 inch U bolts. The big plus is the 15" offset, so for those folks who have wide overhangs this might be the solution for you. Add a 2x4 to the mounting bases then you actually have 16.5 ". The ones I got use 6 tubular steel bars so it is definitely sturdy. I need it to be sturdy since the mast will be freestanding past the mounting brackets, probably about 5-7 feet.

Now back to my mast, do you guys know which is a thicker gauge? In case the RS mast is slightly thicker, would you still use the wider diameter emt pipe or not? I'm also not sure if these "heavy duty" masts are engineered differently to withstand winds but I doubt.

Also, what type of paint would you use for the metal (and coax) parts? Maybe gray spray primer?

Thanks!
