View Full Version : Any way to mitigate motion artifacts??

Yesterday, I went to view the Philips PDP-5041HD at Best Buy. It has the sharpest picture I have ever seen and probably the clearest colors as well.

But one major problem with it is motion artifacts. It was almost bad enough to make me not consider it.

So my question is, what kind of setting tweaks can be done to mitigate motion artifacts, if at all? And what plamsa tvs are best for reducing this phenomenon?

Thanks.

See the FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV". Turning down the sharpness and turning off, or reducing, velocity modulation will mitigate some of the macroblocking effects. You will see these on any TV, but some TVs introduce different artifacts of their own (like DLPs "dithering" in dark areas).

So is blocking during motion the fault of the TV or compression of the signal? Everytime I see it (quite frequently) I blame it on Dish overcompressing, because I don't see it with DVDs.

It's due to the limits of MPEG. MPEG takes an original HD uncompressed signal of over 1 Gigabits/sec and compresses it to around 19 Mb/sec. A compression factor of more than 50. It's actually amazing that it does this so well.

See the FAQ on "Acronyms" for the definition of macroblocking.
