I'm just beginning my journey of the HD universe. Can you tell me if a set that has a internal NTSC tuner is the same as having a internal HD tuner? If not, will hooking this set to my cable or satalite box be all that is necessary for HD viewing? I'm looking at the VIZIO P42HD. What do you think of this unit? Thanks for your response in advance.

You need an ATSC tuner for HD. If you get an HD STB from the cable or satellite company, that is all you'll need and all that many people use. You cannot simply use a "digital" STB, as that is not HD.

You'll have to check what channels you'll get that way though...as many people still connect an antenna with Sat to get their locals in HD.

How much does an average HD STB cost to rent from the cable company? If you dont subscribe to cable do you need to buy an ATSC tuner to use with an antenna?

STB rentals vary in price from 5 to 15 bucks a month depending if your just getting a standard HD STB or if you get an HD STB with a built DVR (highly recommended). Check with you local cable or Sat provider, your choice. If Comcast is local to you, you should be able to go to their website and see what's available and what it should cost you. Good luck.
