Has anyone ever heard of a HD TV that will upconvert to 480p, 720p, or 1080i? I was talking with a friend about the upconverting DVD players. He claimed that it was silly to buy one since both his and my HD TV already upconvert. He claimed that when his TV received an analog signal, not his STB, it would upconvert it to 480p, 720p, or 1080i depending on how he set up his TV. I think he is full of it but thought i would pose the question to people who know more than me.

He's not full of it. Most HDTVs can upconvert incoming 480i/p signals to their native HD resolution (720P, 768P, 788P, 1080i) . Some leave 480P at 480P. Depends on the TV. Hitachis and some Toshibas "have" a 540P option in addition to 1080i on their CRT-based RPTVs.

Any fixed pixel display can only display in its native mode (720P, 768P, 788P, etc). So there, the signal is definitely converted.

However some upconverting DVD players can do a better job, so the picture can be superior. The upconversion in the DVD player is done in the digital domain.

If that is the case, would my Mits WS-55515 upconvert like that? And if so how? Or how would i find out if it does?

Read your operating manual. Somewhere it probably states what it does to incoming 480i 480P signals. Someone on this forum may know. Many older Mits leave 480P at 480P and probably upconvert 480i to 480P. I'm not sure about your TV. I did a quick websearch and could not find a definitive answer.
