View Full Version : Line Noise Question

Whenever my KDF-55WF655 Sony is turned on, on any channel, any input, it makes noise appear on my other Sony TV in the backroom. The backroom TV only has OTA and the noise only appears on Channel 4. It's like 7 large triple "S" shaped vertical lines equally spaced across the TV. I have isolated the antenna to only the backroom TV and the noise is still there. So my guess is line noise. The noise can appear on the front WF655 if I tune to analog Channel 4, but who would do that when Digital HD Channel 4 is there also :)

Any ideas?

Would one of the "monster power" filters help? I ask because I notice the Sony has a "power filter" made into the power cord plug. I currently only has a surge suppessor, an $18.00 GE from the Target store.

Thanks in advance
Bobby R

I would try to turn off all the circuit breakers in the house to see if it helps. This may help you to dtermine if the noise is internal or external. A line conditioner may help, although I would still take steps to ensure that the wiring in your house is safe and suffieciently grounded. Hopefully the noise is a result of an air conditioning unit or other noisy appliance, but again, it could be an issue with the ground.

I meant to say turn off all the circuit breakers except the one that feeds the TV's :)

Sounds like you have a ground loop issues of some kind...

Check all of your splitters and coax connectors. Sounds like one (or more) may have have a bad ground (sheilding). Also, do you have any 'unterminated' coax outputs (splitter, wall plate, coax with no device connected?

Unterminated and/or poor sheilding can act like an antenna.

Unused outputs should be terminated with one of these:

Thanks, Ratman.

Some weeks ago I asked Radio Shack for a terminating resistor because I have an unused splitter fitting and he said I don't need to cap it. But I will feel better to cap it. So, I'll be going back !

I have tried two commercial CORCOM filters on the KDF-55WF655. The 10VB1 and the 3EV1. The 3EV1 is rated to 40db of line noise dampening. After some measuring with a scope I really do not believe the noise in being induced into the power line.

The only option I now see is that when powered up the LCD TV is emitting radiation into the air that is being picked up by the antenna. If that is the case the TV should not pass the FCC or CE radiated emission test. So I opened the manual and I can find a claim that the TV meets those standards. Also since CE and FCC are now "self" certified standards what are the chances the KDF-55WF655 does not really pass?
