What will be the differences between the recently released JVC D-ILA HD-52Z795 model and the upcoming HD-52G886 model to be released in July 2005? Both have 52" screens, silver colored chassis, 720P, with tuners. I wished the 52" model would have had 1080P by year's end, oh well still great resolution anyway.

I would add that the model with firewire will have an internal HD tuner, cable card slot and all of that sort of stuff. The original JVC dilas did not have an internal HDtuner.

I'm confused about this part of your post, TVAuthority:

ATSC Tuner
CableCard

Shouldn't a set with the CableCard feature have ATSC and QAM tuners, as well as perhaps an NTSC tuner? Don't you need all three types to receive current analog signals, digital cable SD signals and digital cable HD signals, or am I mixed up?

In other words, with cable TV and a cablecard, will this set show all types of channels - analog, digital SD (scrambled and unscrambled) and HD (scrambled and unscrambled)?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm trying to get things straight before I plunk down big bucks on a TV. And the JVC HD61Z886 is one I'm seriously considering.

No.

NTSC is analog.
ATSC is digital.
QAM64 is digital cable.
QAM256 is HD digital cable.

CableCard is only for unencryption of (normally) premium digital cable channels.

Thanks for the clarification, but I'm still confused as to how this applies to the JVC TV. If I plug the cable into the back of my TV, it provides three of the four program types you mention - the low channels are analog, the high channels are SD digital cable and any HD channels are HD digital cable. An attached antenna would perhaps provide OTA analog, SD digital and HD digital. Can the JVC TVs listed above provide all of these signals without a set-top box?

Any Television with the current version of Cablecard will not display any premium or pay channels without a set top box. From what we are hearing Cablecard v2 will be out later this year and will be bidirectional, thus allowing you to receive any of these premium channels without a seperate box.

*The next versions of Media Center PC's will also support this new version of Cablecard... so if you're buying a television today your HTPC will truly eliminate your set top box tomorrow.

This is incorrect. The function of the CardCard is to permit access to premium and encrypted cable channels without a cable box.

You're confused with the real limitations which are:
No "interactive" features such as Channel Guides and Video-on-Demand.
PPV cannot be 'ordered' interactively, but an order can be placed by phone.

Also...
From a lot of stuff I've read, I wouldn't be optimistic about CableCardII availability by the end of the year.

Dude, I got such a great deal on my HD52575, $1800 at ultimate electronics. The PQ is graet, but it doesn't come with a buit in tuner so I have to pick one up, but that's ok, the after market tuners are a lot better anyway. Does anyone recommend one that they are using?
