I have an opportunity to purchase a 55315 new for $1200 from a dealer. I can also purchase an akai pt5598hdi from sams club for $1100 or less (new model coming out soon). I will at some point need a tuner for over the air hd viewing... Please inform me on the model I should purchase! I need some advice soon.....deals might disappear soon.....HELP!!!!!

Get the mitsubishi (or any name brand). As I understand it, those Akai's are made by Apex (or some other "generic" brand) and if you ever need service (and eventually you will), you'll never get it on that generic brand tv.
I've got an Apex 27" tv I bought for my kids bedroom, lasted 13 months- and something went wrong inside, now it shows all green... and its NOT repairable... well, it is, but for $200 I can replace the TV with ANOTHER tv. So why bother?
Those cheap TV's are classed as DISPOSABLE by service technicians, its worth the extra money to get a real name brand, where service manuals are available, parts are available and support is available. And Mitsubishi is a great TV.
How's that saying go? The bitterness of poor quality lasts longer than the sweetness of low prices ? :D

Toaster, thanks for your input....I received my mits 55315 today....love it! Not only do I feel that it is better quality than akai, but it is 6" shorter, 1" narrower, and 40 pounds lighter.... thanks again!

Not Apex. For a projection TV, they were a good deal. I'm sure Mitsubishi is good too. Until you step up to LCD projection, CRT projection is just a way to get started in widescreen.

I would advise further research on your part. Endorsing a TV with grey-blacks, fast-motion smearing, and general poop quality isn't a swift idea. Take the money saved, buy a good CRT, and have it ISFd.
You'll thank me later.
