View Full Version : Sanity check on antenna choice - Radio Shack UHF only in Attic?

I just pulled my new Probrand Digitalstream HD3150 receiver out of the box two nights ago and hooked it up to an old Terk TV-3 indoor antenna. In moments I was receiving my local NBC, FOX, CBS, ABC, WB and PBS digital signals. Hooray!

Admittedly, I must occasionally "coax" the rabbit ears to maintain an acceptable signal on some of these channels, so it's not perfect.

All the digital stations in my locale are UHF.

I bouught a UHF only outdoor antenna from Radio Shack, and plan to mount it in my attic.

Does anyone see a flaw in this plan? Any common "gotchas" to be mindful of?

My Antennaweb.org readout:

Only concern is PAX... wrong direction.

Best/worst direction is low=245 degrees, high=265. Aim the antenna at 255.

And... you'll need a 300 to 75 Ohm balun to connect the antenna to the coax.

Follow-up post:

I opted to put the UHF antenna on the roof, next to an already installed Dish Network receiver. I used diplexers to run the signal down the exisiting coax, and placed an RCA amplifier after the inside diplexer. SNR for all of the channels broadcasting digital was right at 30. Perfect reception.
