I currently have an HD-PVR which does not have an active DVI output. I am considering swapping to a different model that has an active HDMI.

My question is whether or not this is worth it? Is the difference in quality THAT much better?

Also, I read somewhere that convergence can not be adjusted with DVI input. Is this true? Do I assume that somehow the convergence is always perfect with DVI? Doesn't make sense to me....

Thanks!

Read the FAQ on "DVI Connectors".

I believe you may be confusing convergence and stretch modes.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was not confused between the 2, I'm aware of the stretching limitations, but I also did read somewhere that convergence can't be altered using this input. Didn't think it made sense - perhaps the person who wrote it was confused...thanks again!

On most TVs I believe you need to receive an NTSC signal to perform convergence. DVI should not hinder that process, however, if it does, a simple feed to the internal TV tuner would circumvent that issue.

is it THAT much better?.... Beauty is in the eye...

I like it better than component on a direct view CRT 34"... but that's me... it's digital out of the box and converted at the TV.... perhaps that means that the TV has better conversion capability than the STB....Hmmm :sherlok:

I can't speak for the quality difference but I do believe it really depends on how good you're component video cables are.

If you are using low end cables you could be experiencing a loss in PQ and not know it. If you you a DVI/HDMI cable then you would be much less likely to have any PQ problems as DVI/HDMI cable are digital and therefore much less susceptable to interference. Typically a digital interface either works or doesn't, much like digital cable. You either get a great picture or none at all.

As for the convergence question... Again, I can't speak from experience as I'm not yet using a DVI/HDMI cable (soon will be :)) but you should be able to do the convergence for that input as well. What you're probably remembering is that you need to do it seperately from the other input types. Panasonic RPTV's (and most others) have convergence settings for each resolution/input type. Therefore you will need to set up the convergence again for each resolution you will display over your DVI/HDMI connection.

*NOTE: I am by no means an expert here and could be wrong. I base my information from what I've read over the last couple months and from what I've observed while 'tweaking' my Panasonic PT-53WX54 TV.
