I currently have comcast HD but the FOX affiliate does not broadcast in HD here in Tallahassee. I tried Dish and they wont have it. I tried Direct and they said they would be broadcasting but its $200 for the HD box through them and now your stuck with it for a year.
HELP, I'm lost in the blachole of north Florida.
You would think in the state capital the infrastructure would at least be somewhat upto date.
And, why the heck did FOX get the "big game" anyway? If ESPN was broadcasting it 99% of us probably would have been able to get it.
Just going nuts. All this technology and you cant even watch one football game in HD.
I suppose I drive the three hours and pay the 5K for 2 tickets and see the game live........but I think it looks better in HD....how weird is that....
Any help would be appreciated...

Your other option of course is to get it over the air with an antenna as long as your close enough to your towers and your local Fox station is broadcasting in HD OTA, Check antennaweb.org and post your results back here. You'll also need an ATSC tuner which your TV may have built in or you might need to purchase one. What model TV do you have also?

ESPN is a cable channel less viewers than any of the others by a mile.....Try an antenna and an OTA only box....

I have a Sony 34" CRT widescreen KV-34HS510
Dont think it has a HD tuner of any kind.
I called Voom and they said there was a FOX station broadcasting in Bainbridge GA FOX 50.1 WTLH-DT 74 degrees 31.3 miles
I called the FOX affilate and got right through to the engineer. He told me that in Tallahassee they do not have the equip to broadcast HD and that the location I was givin was aimed directly at Bainbridge and I wouldnt be able to tune it in.
I was thinking of giving it a try. I found a couple of threads here that spoke of antena configs and such.
Looks like good ol radioshack is the place to shop.
Is there one HD reciver that is better than the other. At least one that I can pick up at bestbuy or somewhere like that.
Thanks
J
Oh ya, as far as ESPN. Why the heck is it that ESPN is in HD almost everywhere and is so much smaller than FOX>........ hmmmmm Kind of backwards, dont ya think......

Fox is HD, just your local station isn't, ESPN is a cable channel, they don't have affiliates and broadcast towers all over the country to upgrade..
Do you have service through Voom? Your Voom receiver has an ATSC tuner built in, you wouldn't need to buy another one.

I think I am going to hold off on VOOM for now.
They have other issues here in Tallahassee I guess.
I would hate to have to go through waiting for an install date with Voom and have some half-ass tech come out and drill holes in my house. I really only want to see the superbowl in HD. I can wait for Comcast and Fox to catch up.
I am still unsure if I can pull in that tower in GA.
I was thinking of giving it a try on my own and see what happens. Then just return it if it doesnt work. Much quicker.
I need to look at the channels offered by voom. And read reviews and stuff. The sales person at Sears didnt have to many good things to say about Voom.
I kinda like the Idea of tinkering around with OTA.......
Plus I have my internet with Comcast.
Thanks again for the help.
I understand the position that FOX is in verses ESPN, but that doesnt make me accept it... :mecry:

You know Voom was bought by Dish is probably going to cease to exist soon right?
Again, go to antennaweb.org and check to see how close the nearest Fox station is to you, post the results here. Until you can determine the actual mileage between you and the nearest tower, we can't help recommend what you do to receive it...

Ok sorry about that.
And, no I had no idea that Voom was going to be bought out by Dish!!
I would imagine that they will continue service to Voom customers?????
This is all they had for digital in my area.
* yellow - uhf WTLH-DT 50.1 FOX BAINBRIDGE GA 74° 31.3 50
* yellow - uhf WFSU-DT 11.1 PBS TALLAHASSEE FL 217° 14.9 32
* yellow - uhf WCTV-DT 46.1 CBS THOMASVILLE GA 83° 16.2 46
I just got a HD reciver at Radio Shack Accurian and a VU-190XR Antenna
I was going to give a try on the porch tonight.......

You should be able to get your station at 31 miles out, your stations are all UHF, you don't need that big combo antenna you got, something like Radio Shack part number 15-2160 would work fine outdoors. I haven't been able to confirm that station is actually broadcasting in HD though, they might just be SD digital.

Actually there are a few more stations
* red - vhf WABW-DT 5 PBS PELHAM GA 07-07 76° 32.9 5
* red - vhf WTWC-DT 40.1 NBC TALLAHASSEE FL 74° 31.3 2
* red - uhf WTLF-DT 24.1 IND TALLAHASSEE FL 135° 4.2 24
* blue - uhf WTXL-DT 27.1 ABC TALLAHASSEE FL 76° 31.3 22
What is SD Digital??

Digital transmission with only a 480i or 480p signal instead of 720p that Fox uses for their HD shows. Just because a station is digital doesn't mean it's HD.

While there is a possibilty of VOOM ceasing business, it is not for sure. Dish only purchased a Satellite and an uplink center- Quick Cash. Not the programming or subscribers. Don't be suprised if you hear of another bidder for the business itself.
Voom is still adding programming and taking new subscribers. They also still have 2 satellites in orbit plus orders for 2-3 more.

True, I'd let the dust settle before I went through the trouble of getting Voom installed though...

Ah HA
I see now.
Welcome to the black-hole called Tallahassee!!!!!!!
I should be able to view the signal with the HD-Reciver I bought????
As far as Voom
I dont think I will take the leap just yet.
I really like the DVR that Comcast offers. It works really slick!!
Espacially for the VCR impaired like my wife!!!! :cheers:

Ok, heres the deal.....
I hooked up the antena and stuck it in the ground on a 10ft poll.
I have the 190 mile antena from Radioshack and a Radioshack receiver.
VU-190xr
I can get 3 channels, and none of them are fox 50-1 I get about 8 or 9 on the signal strength meter for 50-1.
Tomorrow I am going to get up on the roof with it and have the wife watch the TV.
While I quickly was giving it a try I was able to tune the third channel. I was originally only getting 2.
So far no go.
Would a different receiver help at all????

I'm in the same boat over in Panama City. I spoke to our local Fox engineer in Oct 2004 and he said they had the station ready but was just waiting for the sat link equipment to come in from fox. I asked when he thought it be ready and he said, "this fall".
Well, here it is a week from superbowl sunday and no HD.

The reciever is from Radioshack.
The name on it is Accurian
Ya Panama City. All of North FL is basically screwed. I can get a signal strength of about 9 from a tower 30 miles away.
Dont you love it!!! They push you to buy all this thechnology and they wont upgrade there towers to support it. Silly. Just agaravates.
Why cant Comcast or the other providers retransmit with permisssion of FOX onto another channel.
We need to start a petion and get some visiability!!!!!!
Anyone onboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 :rockon: :shootout:

Well first off your local Fox has to be in HD then they need to have a carriege agreement with Comcast to let them carry it. Comcast can't by law carry an out of area channel as an alternative as far as I know.

I know I know!!! For just one event. And all the money we give them, and all the money spend on the equipment. You would think they would or could make one exception. If for nothing elese to boost sales. Or sell it as payperview.
I kust wont let go.......

I know I do!!!!!
From all of the research I have done, it looks as though all or most of northern FL from Pensacola to Jacksonville will not be able to take advantage of there hard-earned money that they spent and or are spending on HD equipment and service providers.
I am sure that there are more of us out there all over the country!!!!!!!!
I know it wont or it cant happen, but wouldnt it be nice of FOX to allow Comcast and the other providers to pipe it in over another channel somehow.
We all know it can be done. Heck, I would even be willing to pay some sort of a one time fee like pay-per view or something.
There has to be a way.......
Anyone have any ideas. :patriot:
I need to see my patriots. We are very home sick........

I have a Dish Network System and the only channel they offer in HD is CBS. The cable company in my town offers everything but CBS. I am seriously looking at switching over to Charter.

I know I do.
I thought I had sent this earlier, but I cant find it now????
I have found out that most if not all of FL will not be able to see the superbowl in HD.
THis is crazy. There must be something we can do????
It really drives me nuts that we spend all this money on equipment and the providers are unable to find a way to get special events out to us poor souls.
How many other people out there are having this same issue.
Lets do something about it!!!!!!!

Hey, I don't get HD at all. There's a political battle between my cable company and my town, so the cable hasn't been upgraded to carry HD signals; there are buildings and trees blocking salelite signals; and the hills around me block OTA.
If I never bought my DVHS machine, I wouldn't know what HD looks like.

Just an area update.
Here in Panama City, we just got our local Fox station added on Comcast in HD (WPGX 28) today, Friday 2/4/05.
