HDMI carries both audio and video signals while DVI just carries video signals.

HDMI or DVI has been a relatively moot point until displays with HDMI inputs began to appear. Many people think that HDMI is the same as DVI except it also carries audio. This is not correct. DVI is an 8-bit signal only while HDMI can carry 10 bits or even 12 bits. Many DLP displays had DVI connectors and people used to use adapters or special cables to feed the display. This means you are wasteing the quality of your source device by converting it "down" to DVI.
Currently HDMI is the highest quality type of connection available to us, although I do agree that it is better (for the time being at least) to connect your sources directly to your amplification/receiver by either the coax or toslink digital connection for the sound.
Hopefully the manufacturers will straighten out all the compatability issues and we can all just use one cable in the future although it is highly unlikely that anything we buy today will be able to accomplish the task.
