Guys,

Very interested in buying a Sony 51ws520, but extremely concerned about burn in and flickering.

While I won't play video games on this TV, I know 99 % of the cable stations have that logo in the right hand corner. Will this over time become a
permanent burn in problem ?

Also, i know the 500 series ( or maybe later) had a flickering problem. Has this been addresed in the 520 series or does it still happen in the 520 ?

Any help would really be appreciated because i am banging my head against the wall :( trying to decide.

Burn in and flickering ??

thx for your help .

I would only worry about the logo burning in if that was the only channel you watched. It actually takes a lot to get burn in and if you change channels from one program to the next you will be fine.

Don't know about the flicker problem but thought I read somewhere that it had been fixed. But I could be wrong. Don't hold me to it.

I heard if you do get a burn in you can somewhat erase it . To do this you have to use a camcorder and film a very bright light against a white wall for an hour . Then play this back on your TV over and over for an overnight period . Now I've never done this , but this was told to me buy a TV repairman . I had burn in on a previous RPTV of a channel logo . I took a couple of years for me to notice it and when I had it , it was very faint and did'nt bother me to much . I was going to try the method I spoke of but instead had the crt tubes replaced under extended warranty . The extended 3 yr warranty covered in house trips to clean and adjust convergence and any repairs needed to the TV . At the end of the 3 yrs I noticed the burn in so they ( Sears ) replaced the tubes and everything is back to new . So if you know it's going to happen , it's nice to know that the warranty took care of it .

Gregg, the method you mention has been discussed before. Basically what you are doing is 'quickly aging' the CRTs. It's not really recommended as the "mild" burn in that this will erase will be erased simply by watching the TV for a while longer, provided you don't continue to burn in the image you already acquired.

A difficult burn can only be erased by replacing the CRTs.
