I have a 34" Sony XBR that is around 2 months old. So far love it.

After finding out that MediaCom and Fox don't seem to be able to get along in Des Moines I picked up an Antenna so that I could see the game in HD. I figured what they heck, $20 for one is not bad.

Hooked up the Antenna, searched for channels and bingo. Now have more HD then I get with the cable package.

ABC is a bit fuzzy but NBC, CBS and PBS are all crystal. Now on to Fox.

The picture is fine, just one problem. They appear to be transmitting in 720p and my TV appears to dislike it. It will only allow me to stretch the picture which, and I know some people like this but, basically makes everyone look fat.

I don't like stretched pictures, because I think they look horrible. I can't seem to find any way around it though. Even when I use Zoom it just Zooms in the stretched picture.

Anyone have any ideas?

ABC is also 720P, so I doubt that's your problem. A true HD signal is 16:9, no stretching required. You may be viewing the SD channel?

Well the TV states the signal it is getting.

It said...

ABC 480p
FOX 720p

Fox is the only station that says 720p...all they others are 480p or 1080i.

When I try to change the signal size...Normal is not allowed, just Full and Zoom. Will wait to see the Superbowl which will be in true HD. Maybe it was SD even though it said 720p.

See the FAQ on HDTV formats. ABC is not 480P - there are no 480P stations! It's 720P. Something is amiss here.

I assume you're seeing this off the TV's internal tuner and not some external STB?

I'm watching the SB pre game festivities on FOX on my new KDP57WS655 HDTV and the picture is awesome  , i'm getting the full screen in 16x9 with no problems in 720p all off an OTA antenna.

Well I switched on Fox today and saw a quick golf clip that looked right. The signal did not appear distorted.

Strangely...ABC says 480i now. Yes that is on the internal HD converter on my set. All the other stations look like what they say. Though I have not hit ABC at a time when they are sending an actual HD signal and wonder if the set is saying the wrong setting. Though it has been right on for most of them that I have seen. So you are right...it is strange. I am wondering if it is saying that during SD signal?

Well just checked quick and it says 720p. So that is good. I will keep an eye on the setting the set states.

If ABC says 480i then you're watching an SD station. HD stations broadcast in HD format all the time, even when showing upconverted 480i material with "black bars".

Fox is HD almost all day today with the Superbowl.

Well Fox HD ran great during the superbowl. There was only one commercial where the signal was distorted. I found that kind of strange. I don't remember the commercial but most of the commercials had the black bars on the side, basically SD but this one appeared to be filmed in HD, at least it seemed but displayed in 4:3 I believe. Forgive me if I have the wrong value. And was then converted to 16:9, which distorted the picture.

Still trying to find an ABC show in HD. Might have to wait till Wednesday for one.

Still trying to find an ABC show in HD. .See the FAQ on HD programming guides. Most prime time viewing on the major networks is now HD. (8-11PM on ABC Tuesday from what I can tell)

Ya I just don't watch much ABC at all. Besides them being arses and having their shows 5 minutes off so that they can screw people, most of their programing sucks.
