A friend of mine has the Panasonic you are looking at in the 50-inch. I recently found out that he has been having problems with it. There is a discoloration on his screen, a pixel has blown out, and he has had to replace the bulb. He has had the TV less than a year. Not to say that these problems could not occur with any LCD RPT though, He could have just purchased a lemon.

Don't mean to scare you but...I have the PT-45LC12 and have basically junked it. The bulb only made 500 hours at best ($300+), 1 year, and the power supply went after 2 years($600+).

Sorry but I should never have to spend $900 in two years on a TV that I paid $2500 for.

It was my last Panasonic product.

I have hear of others with the same issues and still others with no issues.

Most agree though that you need to upgrade the internal fan because it is very inadiquate for the box.

There are a few different opinions on it. Some like it some dont. I have the 50 and love it, no fan noise, no picture issues, good look and connections galore. Use the search feature and enter the model number (lots of threads come up on it). Good luck and have fun.

I own the PT-60LC14 and also have no complaints. No issues with PQ, Fan noise or anything. I actually love it and have no problems. Issues described above with the discoloration are rare for any make or model. My only gripe is...I wish there was more than 1 HDMI input. Other than that..I'm pleased.

Fastlane,

I have the exact same model - I love it! Other than the fact that it might need some tweaking once you get it set up, it's running fine! I'm having the warranty folks come to change the pincushion and parabola settings (the picture has a kind of hourglass look to it) and I'm waiting for my DVE disc to come so I can really tweak some things. Make sure you buy the in-store warranty if they have one - it'll save you money in the long run if it needs a new bulb or the unit needs replacing...

Enjoy!

The in store warranty does not cover bulbs so that is why i am iffy on getting it. I have 4 days from today to decide weather 400$ for an extended warranty is worth it if they wont replace bulbs... what else could go wrong...dont know really. Do you think it is still worth getting the warranty?

Well as bolaar said above, they had to replace the $600 power supply so you do the math - I'm assuming that if the in-store warrany doesn't cover replacement bulbs, they should at least replace the unit. It doesn't make sense but I've seen some warranty policies that work this way. They don't want to have to service the unit so they just replace it...

they say i pay for the bulb and they will replace it for free under the warranty. I just don't know if it is worth it or not.. i have until this saturday to decide. 450$ is alot of money expecially if nothing goes wrong with it.

The bulb is very easy to replace, its made so almost anyone can do it. Dont worry about the extended warranty, especially at that cost. I don't know where you bought, but if its anything like the store I bought from, they will be sending you letters and calling you just as you sit down to watch your HD set offering that extended warranty once again.

They will probably do this trough out the first year since its covered by the manufacturers warranty and might have to service it if something does go wrong.
Sometimes the other offers you might get later on are better or you could pick shorter terms for a lower price. I wouldn't buy though unless it covers the bulb.

Ya i talked to a few other people and they say the same thing, i think i am going to pass on that warranty, they are only giving me until this saturday to purchase it, for that much money i could get the matchin stand for this tv almost which sounds like a much better idea. Thanks again for the reply

First of all, I bought this tv a couple of weeks ago and am really starting to like it. The picture seems to be improving, or it's just me, and I haven't even calibrated using the Avia or DVE disk yet. I have no picture issues, can't ever hear the fan and am really looking forward to seeing HDTV! Haven't pulled the trigger yet with the cable company. Kind of thinking I should return and exchange for the same unit w/ buit-in cable card and tuner-PT-43LX64, but no one seems to carry the unit yet.

Regarding the extended warrantly, I bought from CC and to me at least, the price is not worth it. One year you'll be paying for double-coverage over the standard warranty. Check Panasonics wewbsite and you'll see you can obtain additional coverage that picks up after the first year for very reasonable pricing. I'm thinking of doing this. Of course, you'll have to deal with them rather than the local retailer.

I got extended warranty with Ultimate Electonics (it's actually through TechRepair). Covers up to two bulbs for five years. Cost was $450.

So...fan replacement? How do you go about doing this?

Ken,

Honestly I don't know. I have read people saying a few things about it. I know if you have an extended warranty you don't want to do it because you have to cut into the case.

Also read that there was an electical engineer that changed the fuse in the ballast and that was running well.

If I ever fix mine, don't think I will thought, I would replace the fan with something that can actually keep the unit cool.

Did find a place selling rebuilt ballasts for $300...which is not bad but I don't want to spend that and have the lamp go 6 months after that. Just not worth it dumping money into it with no guarantee.
