I have a Sony KP46WT520 46" rear projection HDTV. I've had it less than 1 year and got the HDTV reciever from my cable company almost immediately from when I purchased the TV. I have been watching non-HD channels in the 4:3 mode as I found the picture better (dislike the stretching in the other modes). However, I have noticed slight burn in / shadowing along the sides where the vertical black/grey bars are from the 4:3 pictures. A bit of a piss off, so I have switched back to viewing in the full+zoom mode so I do not damage/burn it in more. However, the damage is done.
Questions: 1) Is it possible to fix this in any way? 2) Is it covered under warrenty (I assume not, but it doesn't hurt to ask).
Thanks,
CivicZ
I would almost guarantee it won't be covered under warranty.
New CRTs is the only fix :(
Sorry,
Lee

I figured I was SOL. It isn't too bad, but noticable enough on a light background that it bugs me... if only I could equally burn in the sides as well :-)
Since the TV was cheap, I assume replacing the CRTs is not cost affective. Correct?
You are correct, replacing the CRTs would not be cheap.
You are probably the only one who notices it, or cares. If its not bad, live with it until you replace the TV.
I do feel your pain :) Same thing happened to me when the kids burned my first RPTV with a Nintendo game. Lived with it for almost 13 years, damned TV wouldn't die :) in fact its still in the family.

(and I was the person to ever notice it!)

Yes, you are probably right Lee. No one else has noticed or said anything about it. At least I have ensured it won't get worse. Thanks.

After a while, with continued aging of the CRTs and viewing in 16:9 mode, the burn in will become less noticeable, but if the damage is "severe" you'll likely always notice it. If the damage is slight, in a year or two, you may no longer see it as the phosphors "equalize" a bit.

Not being a TV electronics tech, I was just wondering. If the burn in occurs on the 3 CRT's, Couldn't they be turned 180 degrees? Wouldn't that not so much reverse it but make it less noticiable or 'even out' faster? :sherlok:
You are probably correct, but if you are going to spring for the labor to do that, may as well replace them? IMHO Don't know what CRTs go for, never been down that road.

Wouldn't the image then be upside down? ;) CRTs cost several hundred dollars each, plus labour.

With the prices of rear projection CRT sets now a days, it seems anybody can offord one.
My grandfather wants to get one after me and him go to foxwoods casino, any suggestions on good brands?
I'd assume toshiba, hitachi ,mitsubishi, since that's what most of you have if i'm not mistaken.
Watched "DR.NO" yesterday after calibrating my set a few days, and wow what a difference:)Picture was so clear i felt like i was there with them.

How long does it take for burn in to occur? I've read some about it, but nothing about the time it takes to happen. I am about to buy a Sony 46WT520 or a 51WS520, and I figure I'll be playing a lot of XBox on it and play Halo 2 for 3-4 hours at a time 1-3 days a week. (I'm worried about the constant HUD thats always on the screen). Also, I'll prob hook up a computer to it sometimes.
I'll definitely be stretching 4:3 to avoid the black bar burn in.

i have the 46wt520, and i play tons of video games. i also watch a wide variety of programming in hd as well as sd. halo also happens to be one of the games that i play a lot of. here's the trick. vary what you watch. don't only play halo. play other games. also, don't turn on your tv, only to play halo, then turn it off. leave your tv on a reasonable amount of time, and vary what's on it. also, i play halo 2 in "full" and in "wide zoom." both have their advantages, and both work well on this tv. use both. there really isn't a drastic difference there, but it positions the stationary graphics of the game differently(i.e. variation). with all that being said, i've yet to experience any hint of burn in on my tv, and believe me, i'm very paranoid about it. after corresponding with multiple people on this site, i've found that it's really not something to worry about, unless you irresponsibly watch your tv(i.e. watching shows with black bars, pausing video games, etc.)
bottom line is, enjoy your tv. you will be fine. you have a great tv, and in my opinion, it looks better than it's 50" rp lcd counter part. i have them both in my house, and the rp crt 520, looks great...especially for video games. there isn't any hint of blur as fast-moving images move accross the screen. test it...if you have the opportunity, while playing halo, move your guy's arms accross the screen quickly. it will blur so much, it'll make you sick(rp lcd). on the 520, it's perfect.
here's another thing. my cable company recently changed from the motorola dual tuner hd boxes to scientific atlanta boxes. the sa box is great! it bypasses the zoom modes on the tv, and it allows me to use 4 preprogrammed ones on the box. this allows me to watch, for instance, a show that's on an hd channel that's not truly in hd, without bars. if your cable company provides this box, or if you can find one, get it. you'll love it. by the way, it's a dual tuner dvr w/pip too.
VARIATION, VARIATION, VARIATION!
the sa box is great! The SA8000HD and SA8300HD have been discussed a lot on this forum.

UTrod03, thanks for the advice. I just happened to stumble across this site yesterday, because I noticed a slight discoloration that may be burn in horizontally across my Panasonic PT47X54. I think that it may be from playing halo 2 in full screen mode with two players. You can only really notice it when the screen is white or gray, but it bugs the hell out of me. I just noticed it recently so I am just assuming that halo 2 is the cause, because that's the only thing I can think of that I play alot, and the only thing that has an image(the black line) that stays on alot. Again, it's very hard to see even when the screen is white, but I notice it.
