I have a new Sony kd36xs955, and am a newbie. Love the tv, and have gotten so much useful information from this forum.

Do I need a professional calibration? Do I need to get inside the "service" menu and tweak this tv in order to get a better, more long-lived crt? I am confused about this issue, and do not want to spend another 4 or 500 dollars.

My husband would freak about that concept for sure.

Another quick question, do I need to be worried about burn in with this tv? If I watch a lot of hdtv (letterbox) will the black on top and bottom cause a burn in issue? I thought not, but have read recently that crt's are vulnerable to burn in.

By the way, my SD picture improved dramatically when I hooked up the 8300 to the tv using hdmi port.
:D

If you want the most out of the set, then yes a full calibration can improve the picture tremendously, it did on mine.

I agree but am not sure what you mean. Did you pay a tech or buy one of those nice home theater dvd to calibrate? Please advise. Thanks

The home theater DVDs are basic to setting up the user menu, and something you can do right away to reduce excessive brighness, oversaturated colors, etc. etc.

You generally want to get a good 100 hours on your display before calibrating.
ISF calibration is much more involved, and requires the use of expensive instrumentation in the process. It cost a few hundred bucks, but well worth it, IMO.

i bought a calibration disc and a service manual for the service menu, and did a lot of research before i started tinkering with the service menu.

Let me tell you this though, if you don't know what your doing in the service menu then you could really screw up your set.I'd just use the calibration discs like avia or DVE and calibrate your set.

...did a lot of research before i started tinkering with the service menu.

That's a given. The SM is not a place for the curious or uninformed.

And most importantly,"always write down your original settings" before you tweak in the service menu.
