Looking at purchasing a big screen for my basement. My setup is that the tv fits in the corner which leaves both couches about 7-9 feet away. I really like this 47" widescreen but I'm wondering how it'll look...especially since I'm not using HDTV signal now (thought I'd wait and just use my existing Directv signal)

Anyone think this is too close for that size? Or am i fine?

Tv is to small..You could go up to a 57 inch at that range. For some unscientific reason TV's shrink with use. I sit about 8-9 feet from my 50 inch. The ideal position is when your periphreal view is not to far off the edge of the TV.

Which would put you at 34 - 43" for 7-9 feet. Personally I think for a wide screen you can go a bit larger. I sit 8-9 feet from my 51" and it seems just about perfect, maybe a touch too close...

I like both the Samsung's 42" & 47" widescreens...sounds like I should go with the bigger one.

I read a document about CVP ( Critical Viev Point ) for watching TV. For old standard 4:3 TV, it's about 7 times the height of the TV. For new HDTV 16:9, it's about 3.2 times.

I have a 65" wide screen and sit at 10'-11' away and really enjoy the picture fr DVD player at 480p.

I think you can go larger, maybe to 55" wide screen.

My Samsung 65 was delivered about 2 weeks ago and definately was bigger in my living room than in the store. I sit about 8-9 feet away, can't move my couch any more. It took a little getting used to but now that I've had it for awhile it seems to have shrunk and fits right in with my living room.

No HD tuner yet but DVDs rock. Cable can be a little grainy on some channels, again I got used to it pretty quick. Digital cable channels are actually quite clear. Did put an amp on the cable line and that helped clean things up. I'm holding out hope that Charter will be offering HD feeds on the local in Wisconsin soon. Will be like getting a new TV again when that happens.

I don't think you'll have any problem with the size on the 47. Like I said, they seem to shrink.

I have has a Toshiba 65H80 for over a year now. The longer I look at it the smaller it gets. My living room is 20 x21, but my recliner is 10 feet from the screen and the picture is awesome.

When you go to the movie do you set in the back row. If you set in the middle, my 65inch HDTV would seem small compared to setting in the middle of a movie theater.
