In your case with a CRT you probably wouldn't see any difference between component and DVI/HDMI. I grouped DVI and HDMI together because they both carry data in the same form, just the connectors are different.
In the end the best is whatever one provides you the best PQ for your equipment.
Check the FAQ's here for the specifics on each.

thanks ..ok I have DVI outlet on my HD cable box and HDMI on my tv what can I do???
Also see the FAQ on DVI connectors. It explains why there's no right answer.
You can buy a DVI to HDMI cable. See the above FAQ.

Look online if you want a DVI to HDMI cable, only thing you'll probably find locally is the $120 Monster cable... You don't need anything fancy with digital, as long as the 0's and 1's get there the PQ will be the same.

Does a more expensive DVI cable transmit a better picture quality HD signal than lets say a $30 DVI cable?? in other words will it improve the picture quality of HD programs?

As long as the info gets there, that is all that matters. The info does not care if it travels a $150 cable or a $20 cable.

a 30 dollar dvi cable is just as good or better, then a hundred dollar dvi cable.

I'll repeat myself, it's transmitting 0's and 1's, as long as they get there the PQ will be the same regardless of cable cost. The only time you could have a problem is if the cable is causing data to be dropped and that's usually noted by sparkles on the screen from the missing data.
