I'm looking to purchase a wide screen HDTV in the coming weeks. If at all possible, I'd like to stay under $1800 for the set...which probably means I'd be looking at a 48" tops.
From everybody's experience out there, what is the best brand/model (quality & economically) for me?

Panasonic 47 inch
Toshiba 50 inch
Mitsubishhi 43 inch
Samsung?
All in your range,
Largest size for the money and still good is the Toshiba 50H82- internet price between 1700 and 1800. Get your best internet price and see if anyone will match. Sears should and they carry Mits,Hitachi,Samsung and Toshiba.

Sears had some nice closeouts where I live today. I saw a Mits 50" for 1799.97 MINUS 10% (sale prices apply to closeouts, the saleman told me!), so for about 1700+ including sales tax!
Go to the stores once every couple of weeks and watch for discontinued/closeouts/etc. Sears is EXCELLENT for this.

I paid 1750.00 for my 48 inch JVC. I couldn't be more happier with this unit. I love the silver cabinet and the fact that there is no cheesey speaker fabric found anywhere on it. But the picture is great and I think the price is within the range your looking into. I know that alot of people here are not sold on the JVC's but i gotta tell you, this is a good set.
