I understand that Mitsu/Sony are top of the line when it comes to HDTV wide screens. But is there a big quality dropoff when considering a panasonic? I'm looking at a 48" panasonic widescreen and I can't tell that big a difference. (at least in the store) Is this brand just as good? Any noticable differences?

Depends on the model, but Sony is by no means "the best". Hitachi, Toshiba, Panasonic, Mits and Sony all have good models. I would consider Samsung, RCA, JVC the next level down, but perhaps gaining. Good picture quality can be had from almost any HDTV. Sharp and Zenith don't seem to have a large market penetration, so I can't comment.

As for RPTV's, the Pioneer Elite series beats them all. They have the best line doublers available. Instant A/B comparisons to other brands may be a problem since it is difficult to find a retailer that offers several high-end brands. Before I invested in HDTV, I visited several stores, played with many different brands, watched satellite, OTA, and DVD sources, and still never saw anything that came close to Pioneer's PQ. Like many observations however, it's all very subjective. I might add that a friend who owns a front projection system (he spent thousands) says my Pioneer looks better! :D
