View Full Version : KDF-50WE655 Sound Quality?

Hey folks,

Just wanted to inquire about the sound quality of the Sony KDF-50WE655. What should I expect?

I know a LOT of people are home theater advocates and like a 5.1 surround sound system, but I'm not convinced I could do it right or neatly enough to justify it (plus it's expensive). It's a fairly open floorplan...and just...running the wires and all of that is too much for me. I can't see it done easily or neatly, so I'd rather avoid it.

As long as it's got good, clear sound, decent SRS simulation, and just nice quality speakers, I'll be happy.

(I know the 55 has a speaker system with more speakers, but I just in the end couldn't justify that screen size for my room...hoping the 50 has good sound too.)

Thanks!

I purchased my set in early December and was quite surprised at the robustness, fullness and spatial feel of the TruSurround mode.

Don't get me wrong; it is certainly not up to the level of a 5.1 Dolby surround system, or even my 10 year old 4-channel Dolby and 5-channel Pro Logic setup with my deep bass-capable Definitive Technology speaker system, but its good enough for me to watch without switching on the stereo system for a lot of HD and SD programming.

While DVDs are okay with the TV's speakers, I invariably switch on the stereo for movies and concerts.

With regard to the 55" version: From what I can see in my Sony manual, the 42", 50", 55" and 60" versions of 2005 KDF-xxWE655 series all have the exact same 30W speakers.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear it has very decent sound without adding additional components. Who knows...could happen sometime in the future if I'm convinced it's both justified and can be done neatly, but for a while I'm just going to be using the regular speakers. Sounds like they'll work just fine for my ears. (And I'm coming from a unit that doesn't have a subwoofer at all near as I can tell, so it should be an improvement.)

In regards to my 55 comment, I was talking about the XS. Could be wrong, but I was under the impression it had 4 drivers and a sub as opposed to the WE's 2 drivers and a sub. But hey, as long as this model has good sound, I'm happy. =o)
