How much of a difference will an amplifier make on a cm4228 antenna in the attic?

It could help if you have any channels that are borderline signal strength...

I can view the network analog channels but when I try to view the channels through the HD converter box (samsung sir151) I only receive pbs and pax.

Where is your antenna pointed towards, the Baltimore towers?

No DC, It is about 31/32 miles to DC and about 33/34 to Baltimore

If your not getting any signal at all for the DC digital's, a pre-amp isn't going to help much. Putting that antenna outside would probably make a big difference though.

My understanding with digital signals is that you either get a picture or not, there is no bad hd signals. I can get the analog signals with the 4228. The samsung sir151 doesn't have a percent signal meter.

Check www.antennaweb.org and cut and paste the results here so we can go an idea. Let us know is you want only digitals or both analog and digital.

Also, if you want both DC and Balto, you'll need a rotor. And... the 7777 is VHF/UHF and the 7775 is UHF only.

You should get a meter reading with digital channels.

You need about 60% signal strength to lock in a digital channel, anything under that is not going to give you a picture. Having an STB with no meter makes it harder to determine if you're getting any signal at all or if you're getting one but it's under 60%. Only thing you can do is try the booster and see if it helps... You'd still be better off with the 4228 outside.

Couple of things. An amp will help with a weak station. You can loose 3-5 db of signal strength. inside an attic. Digital UHF stations are usuallly underpowered compared to the VHF counterpart. Is your antenna pointed in the correct direction.?

Technically you are correct in the sense digital is all or nothing but not quite. Either you get a signal or you don't. There is a threshold where the picture is stable or not...on most receivers it a reading of 60 or better. While you may be receiving it below that number the picture would be breaking up or freezing.

kevin, I'll warn ya, antennaweb does not like the Balitmore area for some reason, I'm 40 miles north of the towers and I get WNUV-DT, WJZ-DT, WBAL-DT, WBFF-DT, WMAR-DT, and WMPT-DT just fine but none of them show up on antennaweb when I check my location....

kspore, I live in Woodsboro, not that far from you. I also have the CM 4228 mounted outdoors and use a CM 7775 pre-amp. When I first put the antenna up I tried pointing for Balt. and DC stations and found because of the mountain range between our general area and DC that the Balt. stations were much more reliable.

I only live a few miles farther from the towers than you do but you will need to put the antenna outside or you'll be fighting it forever, I strapped mine to my chimney with hardware from Lowes. I also found that whenever the weather got nasty, rain, fog, drizzle, snow, sleet some channels were either right on the edge or disappeared completely. I added the CM 7775 pre-amp which solved the weather problem. I also get a few of the DC channels, I believe they are getting in through a sidelobe of the antenna that I have seen on the CM 4228 antenna patterns.

If you want DC AND Baltimore, you really need to:

1. Mount the antenna outdoors, up as high as possible

2. Get yourself a rotator: don't depend on a side lobe of the antenna to get reception from 30+ miles away

3. Add a Channel Master Titan 7777 (yes, the 7777, NOT the 7775) preamp

4. Sit back and enjoy pixelization-free DTV from Balitmore AND DC!

Always the thing to do!

This is true, just so happened things worked out for me that the sidelobe was in the right direction and strong enough.

We have no DTV on VHF, analog yes, why spend the extra $ on the 7777?

"We have no DTV on VHF, analog yes, why spend the extra $ on the 7777?"

Not true, Harrisburg, PA has 2 VHF-DT stations, WHP-DT on Channel 4 and WHTM-DT on Channel 10. For about $5.00 more, buy the Titan 7777, or the Winegard AP-8275

That is true, Harrisburg does have DTV but at ~70 miles away in our very hilly and wooded terrain I doubt he'll have much of a shot at getting reliable/ any reception. I'm not saying don't try for it I'm just saying it's somewhat unlikely.
