I have the SonyKDF-55 XS955 Tv and a sony DVD player DVP-NS755V. Its hooked up via the component connectios Y, Pb,Pr and thats it. It does have the S video but I was told i do not need it Is that true??

As long as the component output is used, 'S' video is not needed. Matter of fact, 'S' video is a step below component.

The Sony will a do a great upconversion for the component inputs. Some say HDMI is better, but spending more for another player when the difference might be small? Over at avsforum.com they were checking some block diagrams and it looked liked some HDMI connections were routed to the same paths coming from the component inputs of the set.
You might do a comparison at a willing dealer. But for now it should work just fine.
