I am ready to purchase the 55xs955 LCD and was wondering what people thought about getting another stand besides the sony stand (su-gw12). I like the idea of the TV being strapped into the stand but not the price. Is this TV that top heavy that it needs to be strapped into the stand? Thanks in advance.

I got the 60" version and on a different stand and no problems with it being top heavy or any problems with it being unsteady.
I wouldn't ever pay the price Sony asks for that stand. There is plenty of better looking stands for a heck of alot less and better quality built stands. I know some people on here have tried bargaining with the store on the price but still most of them paid around $500 for it. You can get one heck of a nice stand for around $300 or less. Just search around at stores, internet, or ebay.

THC DLP58X Tech Craft and Flat-Panel TV Stand (DLP58X)
I bought this stand through the circuit city web site and picked it up at the store. It was only $179! It looks just like the sony one!! and holds my 50" sony lcd w/ space to spare. It's 58 inches wide. Your footprint should fit. It's the perfect height for my sony. It only has one glass shelf, but fit 3 stacks of components side by side. (or use separate shelf)
Weird side view:

looks kinda like this one without the glass top:
