All hdtv will display 480i.. 480p.. (some 720p) and 1080i

Some will do 540P on top of the regular fare . I understand it all comes up to 1080I ...great.

The question then is..When playing a dvd on my NON ps Elite dv 05 will it be upconverted to 540P or 480P ??

I believe that most PS DVD players output at 480P. Some, like the Hitachis, output at 540P. Check the specs and the owners manual. The reason that the Hitachi output at 540P, is because you can select 540P as one of the viewing modes on Hitachi TVs. This is why there are sometimes difficulties between Hitachi DVD players and other TV, however, that is rare.

Irrespective of the output on your DVD player, what shows on your TV is selected by the TV, check the TV menus.

Thanks 57,

So, if my purchase were to be Hitachi hdtv with 540p input combined with an Hitachi dvd player with 540p output this combo would yield " better " over all picture quality then 480p ?

The norm on most hdtv whether the dvd is upconverted by the hdtv or by a progressive scan player it's still 480p

I understand about the cable/dish signal all being upconverted to 1080i regardless 540p/480p/480i/720p

In a nutshell 540p playback on dvd...RULES ?

There is not a lot of difference between 480P and 540P, but theoretically, it may be better if you're feeding 540P to begin with.

My Hitachi allows me to select 540P or 1080i as the viewing (upconverted) format from DVD/NTSC signals. This is a user-selectable item on my TV. New Hitachis may too and you can experiment to see which you like better. There is not a lot of difference as far as I could tell. Toshibas may be the same.

Thank you 57,

I am aware of your opinion on progressive versus interlaced players so much that you dont feel the need for one.

Have you ever had the oppurtinuty to view this combo 540p hdtv input and 540p output dvd playback ?

I have never seen this question come up on the forum.

Perhaps the image quality of 540p v 480p dvd playback is moot.

Any one have this combo, and an opinion?

Thanks,

1. If you already have a half decent DVD player, do not expect a big jump in picture quality if you go to PS.

2. If you buy a new DVD player, spend enough money that the PS circuit will be half decent. At least $200-250. I'm sure that a $500+ PS DVD player will have an excellent picture, probably better than any interlaced player, but most people don't spend that on a DVD player.

Thanks,

I use a PC to playback DVDs, so I can quickly and easily change sclae formats. As such I tend to prefer to watch DVDs scaled out to 1920x540p over any of the 480p formats. It could be strictly a function of my set (a Zenith) not having nearly as good a picture quality at 480p as it does at 540p, or it could just be that I thinkg 540p looks a bit better. So my preference if 540p, but you mileage my vary.
