A medium gain antenna with a rotator would be the best bet so you can aim the antenna at the various stations... Everything is UHF, would have to suggest a Channelmaster 4221 or 4228 possiblly for those stations 40 miles out...

He does have one VHF station but the 4221 or 4228 will pick it up, it's in the upper VHF band. A pre-amp, CM 7777, used with the CM 4228 would be useful if you want to go for the long distant stuff. If you did this you might want to get a variable attenuator so the close in transmitters don't overload your receiver.

I'd have to suggest using a good antenna and no pre-amp to start then add the pre-amp if it's found to be needed, needing to adjust a attenuator everytime you move the antenna around will get old...
