I purchased a 60" Sony Grand Wega LCD last February (2004) and it has worked wonderfully (no bulb burnout, fan noise, etc). I have recently noticed a light spot (1" diameter of very faint yellowish hue) near the center of the left half of the screen. It is most noticeable with a dark background and especially when the LCD is powering down (the grey screen immediately after you turn it off). It is not really prominent when the screen images are changing quickly. It is also NOT reflected light on the screen from the room and is not getting worse. Any help regarding the cause, remedy, etc would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the problem, but here's something to try:
Stand in front of the set and place your hands on the upper corners of the cabinet. The cabinet is plastic and has some flex to it. Try to twist a little and notice how you can cause the image to rotate. Notice that by pushing or pulling, you can cause the vertical position of the image to move a little.
Try this with your light spot on the screen. If you can cause the spot to move, than it must be coming out of the light engine. If the spot remains stationary while the rest of the picture moves, it suggests a problem developing with the screen.

I had the same problem with my 42" Hitachi LCD. Only it happened about 3 weeks after getting it and it was more of a light green color. The "spot" was about the size of a golf ball. Luckily it happened early and was able to talk R.C. Willey into bringing me a new TV.

Just got my set back from service. Had the same problem with a Sony KDF-50WE655. Noticed a round spot about the size of a quarter in the upper left quadrant of the screen. The spot was noticable only during dark scenes or when the TV screen was completely black.
Called Sony and set up a service call. Turns out that dust or an inscect (mine was dust) can settle on the mirror. When projected to the screen, the dust is magnified and you get that greenish light spot. After the unit was serviced (mirror cleaned), everything is fine.

I developed 3 of the spots on my sony 42 lcdrp after 3 month's.
You can read up on this problem by doing a search for "crop circles"
Warranty repair is comming next week to replace the entire light engine assembly.

My Sony 60" WF655 complete with matching stand was on sale and with my discount, a little over $3K in December and it still amazes me. Buy it.
The difference in this model vs. the XS is the price for upgrading to 2 vs. 1 HDMI inputs, more colour controls and better internal speakers...but for me, it didn't matter and I saved more that way.
I would suggest an extended warranty to cover any concerns that others have come across in this thread (I did).
