Noob here. Dark colors sometimes appear almost black on my Sony lcd rptv, particularly on HD channels. Is this par for the course and I'll just have to live with it? PQ is otherwise bright, clear, satisfying. But dark colors, like on clothes or hair, get so dark that detail is lost.

Have you used a setup disk yet? See the FAQ's

No, haven't used setup disk yet, but I think I will be doing that. I thought I'd take a shot and see if anyone knew of a tried-and-true quick tweek to address this issue. Thanx for the reply.

The tried and true tweak is to read the FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV".

Sometimes there can be differences between SD and HD inputs. Some HD shows are really dark and the HD programming can emphasize it a bit too much sometimes.

LCDs are not known for dark blacks, so you need to adjust so that you can see shadow details. There's a very good test pattern in the setup DVDs that has black at one end and white at the other with varying shades of grey in between. A proper setup will show a difference between each "panel", so that there is no "black crush" at the black end, or "white crush" at the white end.

Yes, not seeing the "shadow details" is exactly the issue I'm having. The setup disk is next on my agenda.

I have noticed marked differences between inputs, in particular the S-video comes in with a lot more color than the component inputs. Hopefully I can run setup against each type of input.
