View Full Version : Need Help with Design/New HT Room
Hey everyone, sweet site, sweet rooms!
I'm currently gutting my old tv room and plan for a high tech, HDTV/surround (you name it) designed room.
I'm having trouble designing the room though, any suggestions for an app or anything?
thanks in advance.

Provide some details of what your planning and what type of budget you have to work with. Room with windows or basement? Things like that.
It would be best if you provided a sketch of the room, showing doors, windows, sizes, etc (and/or photos) and then what equipment you were planning to install.
I can actually take a pic for you guys. It's pretty small to work with, but major things are planned. So glad I found this site, you guys seem to know your stuff. Going to go take a pic now, and will post w. dimensions.

Its upsetting...I know ;). Thats why it's going under major facelift.
1st floor, as you can see too many damned windows. Probobly going with 0% light drapes, want to be able to cancel out all light.

Cieling - coming out. no matter what
Walls - may just fix them up.
That cabinet thing - Ugly, pointless, and going. Theres a heater in there, so it may need to be re-routed.
TV - Gone, looking for either a directview TV, (around 52 inches or so) or a plasma, not sure which to go yet, seeing as I see all these plasma's with dead pixels...
Plans overall. New cieling, new electric (recurisve lighting), 5.1 (room is too small for 6.1) Plasma or directview,
Some sort of console that will hold all of these.
+Dvd Player
+Xbox
+PS2
+Receiver
+digital cable receiver(what we have now, may go to dish)
+AV switch for it all
Where that garbage couch is, we'd like to replace with a wrap-around leather couch.
It's a small space to work with, but I know damned well its do-able.
My first major overhaul, you've all done it before, need some comments, suggestions! (products, and design. you have somthing to say, say it!)

Tight space but your on the right track. Your opportunity lies in the removal of the ceiling in order to run wiring for your surround (should prove easier to snake down walls). Think about how u wanna set things up. Are you gonna put your new set up in the middle of that wall after the cabinet is gone or are putting it at the corner and angle the set? You might get away with 6.1 by hanging speakers of the ceiling.
Pic slides were pretty slow and froze up. Can you perhaps download pics differently.
Since we're pretty much set on having nearly the same layout as what's been shown, the tv is going to replace whats there, just have to gut the room and find an entertainment unit to accomadate everything. (suggestions?)
We've decided that 6.1 would actually be a bad idea, because the rear center speaker would be directly behind sombodies head on the couch, which would be really annoying.
Webshots froze up? My other album has over 1,600 views and nobodies said that to me. hmm.

Since your going with a wrap around leather coach I would go with a corner stand for your set and to house your equipment. If your thinking about a 52 inch direct view CRTRP you might have some angling issues no matter what. Plasma is a better bet but you might think about DLP or LCD RP. There light, easy to move, & more screen real estate over plasma for the cost.

Something like this would fit nice in the corner, and should hold your equipment.
Hopefully your receiver should work as your A/V switch for all your stuff too.
It all depends what style your looking for as well (modern or more cozy). Would you prefer wooden stands, you might try some manfacturer websites to see what they got. Usually I'll find their sites doing a google seach. Good luck.
I don't think there;s going to be much of an angeling view for plasma, as per how small the room is. No matter where you sit in the wraparound couch you'll always be pretty much facing it head-on, or is the plasma a very line-of-sight view?

Plasma's and LCD's (Flat Panel or Rear Proj.) have very angle viewing capabilities. As much as 160 to 170 degrees. I was referring to your thought about a 52 inch direct view crt rp. In a sectional wrap around sofa, if you sit in the far left or right your picture might/will appear darker than when you sit right in the middle directly facing the set. Take the measurements of the sofa in the room and when you go to a local store try to position yourself in the sitting postion of your sofa, go from left to middle to right and you'll see what I mean. Maybe your not to far off to side and you might be ok.
The side to side view shouldnt even matter, but i'll head over to a best buy or CC and see whats up. (gonna look like an idiot strafing in a store lol)
Now the only thing I need to look for is actual products.
Pretty sure going to be somewhere in the Bose or B and W section as per audio, but what about receiver/tv/couch and so on and so forth?
all comments are taken into high concideration.

"(gonna look like an idiot strafing in a store lol)" We've all been there, several times as a matter of fact.
Go to a Bose store where they'll Demo the Cube system in a theatre setup, they sound nice but their are varying opinions about Bose, since it's not a true Sub set up. For your space might be best option.
Im also going to be getting a sectional in my setup and I am waiting for Macy's to have a sale they have just about every 6 months on living room sets. They usually have good prices on some quality stuff.
Decide on the set and everything else will follow as far as style, look, setup, color of equipment and so on.

Over the weekend I went to a home show and was surprised to find that there were quite a bit of HT displays. I would recommend going to a local home show and see if you see anything that works for you from local vendors. That or pick up a A/V magazine to get more ideas. :sherlok:
