Based on my budget (I'd like to stay under $1700) and the size of my basement, I've narrowed my selection to a 47" HD ready Widescreen from Panasonic and another by Samsung. I'm not interested in DVD picture or HD signals right now. I want the best picture possible using my Directv signal.
Did anybody else do some comparing to see which is the better model? Which has more option? Which is the sharper picture? Or, for my price range is there another model I should be looking at?
Thanks for the help.

I have Directv and have it hooked up to a 34" Sony HDTV. The standard Directv signal is ok but not that great. Imperfections in the picture that are hardly noticeable on my 5 yr old 27" Sony are greatly magnified on the 34" HD one. I can't imagine the picture being any better on a projection tv (I guess it would depend on how far away you are sitting though). Just wanted to caution you not to expect great things from your directv signal, it acceptable, but definitely not spectacular. I would highly recommend, however, purchasing a HD Directv receiver, some of them have really gone down in price. Your paying the big bucks for a nice tv, you might as well utilize it to its full potential. Once you see the HD images, it will all be worth it!

A picture is only as good as it source. Most Hd tv's have poor picture with an analog source. Especialy when put on a larger screen.
You are not interested in the 2 best reasons HD and DVD. I would wait till after the holidays when big sales on electronics go on. You may be able to get a 50 inch for about the same price. Check Sears for best the price. They will price match and always have some kind of 10% sale.
