Hi, I just bought a CT-27HL14 last week. The label on the back of the set says:

---------------------
CT-27HL14J
BP416
... (serial #)
3.2
December 2004
QAM
---------------------

I understand this model isn't supposed to have a HDTV tuner built in, but does anyone know if the "QAM" means anything special? Could there be a QAM tuner function built in that can be brought to life with special remote codes?

That seems odd. There is certainly no mention of ATSC or QAM on the various websites that I went to, unless they are simply referring to the analogue cable channels that all TVs can tune...

All that means is the NTSC tuner is capable of tuning in the basic cable channels up to ch 100 or so, that is if you can get cable directly from the wall. Some cable companies require you to rent their cable box even to get these lower analog channels (like where my Mom lives) but if you can get your basic cable signal directly from the wall (like i can) then the TV will tune em in.
