View Full Version : Speaker on its side?

Maybe a dumb question, but my search didn't really turn up anything.

I recently purchased some audio piers from Target to act as my entertainment center. Black and glass, looks nice, I recommend them. Here's my issue: I've got the Onkyo 6.1 HTIB system and the front speakers are about a foot tall. Right now, they fit, but I had to go with 2 shelves in the pier instead of 3. Not a big deal. However, if I lay the speaker on its side, I could get the 3rd shelf back in there and gain some storage space. So, is having the speaker on its side a bad idea? Offhand the only thing I can think that might be a problem is if it causes a vibration in the stand.

Thanks!

As long as the speaker still points at you, it doesn't matter if they are on their side or upside down. Well, that isn't entirely true. If your speakers have a sub port that is supposed to point at the floor then I would leave them in their normal direction.

Nope. If there is more than one driver in the box, then orientation does matter. If they were intended to be used vertically, putting them horizontal will change the radiation pattern and the sound quality.

While that may not be an issue for you, the only way to know for sure is to try it.
