I bought a GE 52 inch 1080i hdtv monitor. I bought a hd tuner from walmart and fox looks like high definition. I bought a progressive scan dvd player and I have been told that my tv cannot take in a progressive scan through component cables. My question is: is there a dvd player that converts it to interlaced, or a player that is compatible with my hdtv monitor to recieve a crisp picture?

A DVD's and DVD players are interlaced.

Not all DVD players can provide progressive scan. Today... most do.

I find is VERY hard to believe that an HDTV monitor will not accept a 480p signal via component inputs.

What make/model TV do you have?

I too, find it hard to believe an HDTV not to be able to play progressive DVD's. There was another post that I was involved in where a guy claimed his HDTV did not play progressive DVD's, and that his TV was just that way. I just can't imagine that is the case.

I can't find any detailed info.

Here's the easiest way to verify.

Connect the DVD player to the TV with component cables.
Set the DVD to progressive scan (via switch in the back and/or setup menus). If it works... you're all set.

I set it up, but I also plugged in the s video to see what it looked like

To me it looked the same-could I be wrong

Inside my users guide it says the synchroscan circuits automatically detect and display video in various formats including high definition (hdtv 1080i), enhanced definition (edtv 480p), and standard definition (sdtv 480i). Could it be that since I have been watching nascar over the air with my high def tuner that I think the picture is bad when it isn't? The picture still seems a little sandy!

I have already called Thomson and they said it didn't-but those people had to put me on hold because they did not really know how the tv functions

There's no comparison between HD and DVD (p-scan). 99.9% of the time HD will look 'better'.

S-Video does not support progressive.

Make sure your DVD player is set to output progressive.

I have been told that 1080i should really be called 540p
So my thinking is that a progressive scan dvd player should be close to the picture of 1080i. Is this wrong?

Should I still see a somewhat sandy picture on my screen when everything is set up right?

yes

No necessarily. It depends on the production of the source material. It will not look like "HD". But should look very good.

I guess I am completely lost because the picture of the movie Troy looks sandy, but when I put in my wifes movie Home on the Range it looks good because it is a cartoon. I don't know-the company thomson rep doesn't know what is going on. If I get a picture when I hook up the component cables, and the progressive option on the back of the dvd player is on progressive, and a picture comes up, does that definitely mean that I am watching it in 480p?

Yes. That is correct.
Try lowering the 'sharpness' setting on the TV.

Each DVD and each programme will have different "production values", therefore you will see different "quality".

Just a thought, is your version of Troy Full Screen or Wide? I put in a Full screen version of the Passion on my set and it looked very grainy when in widescreen mode, the widescreen version was clear. I saw the 16:9 version of Troy this past weekend and it looked really good.

Troy was widescreen

unplug the s-video, and connect only the componet to the TV and set the DVD player to progressive scan. I've read where some people got results when they only tried to hook up with one set on inputs... you said you aslo had s-video hooked up. S-video will not display progressive output, so try unhooking that and only use the component input. Let's see what that does..

This may or may not relate, but my Sony 36" xbr400 would not auto switch to progressive mode. I had to manually use the TV menu and set it to 480P. of course this was a 2001 model.

Are you satisfied with the picture?

If not can you return the set?

I am happy with the set 1080i with the inhd and inhd2 channel are spectacular

I guess my expectations were to high with progressive scan

The progressive scan light lights up on the sony dvd player, and the picture looks good

Thanks for everyone helping me!

I bought my GE 52 inch tv for 750 brand new, from best buy-I bought a cheap one to begin with because I didn't want to spend 4-5k when decisions haven't been made yet on how abc, cbs, fox etc are going to definitely go with. Plus, is over the air always going to be free? Does ABc etc.. have to be free over the air?

When I hooked up a hd tuner/reciever to it, with an over the air antenna, shows like American Idol look spectacular-definitely high definition-Shows like 24 also look high def-but I think the lighting on American Idol makes it look more hd than 24, but 24 looks better than progressive scan dvd player
