I have a Mitsubishi DLP and a high-def DirecTV TiVo receiver connected via an HDMI cable. This is my second DTV receiver (DirecTV sent me a new one because the picture gradually faded to black using the HDMI cable although the component hook-ups worked). With both the old and new receiver, I have never been able to get audio through the HDMI cable; have had to use analog cables. I know Mitsubishi has a software upgrade for their DLP but I've heard that only solves a variety of unrelated problems. Any advice?

Does the STB not have an optical or coaxial audio output that you can hook to your A/V Receiver?

If you're only hooking to a TV, I can't imagine there'd be much difference.

Please do not cross-post.

Thanks for the reply. The DTV receiver does have an optical digital audio output which I've hooked to my AV receiver. The problem is not so much that the quality of sound is diminished through the TV speakers with the analog audio cables. The problem(s) is/are:
1. I waste the analog audio output connections on the DTV receiver by having to connect them to the TV (I'd rather use these outputs for another purpose) to compensate for the audio-challenged HDMI connection. I COULD just use my AV home theater speakers for everything and bypass the TV speakers, but it's a big production if I just want to watch the news.
2. It has a negative psychological effect on me that this expensive high tech system is not working like it should. Is this an indicator something else will go wrong?

the mitsu hdmi is only compatible with 2 channel audio. (jvc's is the same way, so don't feel left out) also, it will not pass dig audio from HDMI through the coax audio ouput. if there is a quick and easy way to tell the direct tv unit to do 2 channel instead of multi, it should work. you will still need audio hooked up to the receiver.

Thanks so much for responding. I'm a bit new to this game; let me make sure I understand. Your saying my TV's HDMI can only accept 2 channel audio. So, that means my receiver is sending it 5.1 (or greater) and the TV can't accept that, so I get no audio from the HDMI cable. Do I have that right?

it sucks, but it's true. Can you hook up analog audio from your satelite to the tv? you could use 'y' adaptors to get it to the tv and to the other thing you said you wanted to use that for.

I don't understand why the HDMI was made this way either. it seems like such a basic thing, and they chose not to include it. the TV does DD (internal tuner) so it's not a royalties issue. it pretty much makes HDMI audio a crock. unless you want to upgrade your receiver, which might be the point too...

but y splitters should accomplish what you want.

BTW, if you set up netcommand, it should just be one button to watch tv and turn everything on.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll use a splitter to maximize the analog output. Does a splitter decrease quality?

Not to a noticeable level.

Could you instead run an audio out from the TV to the receiver? I suppose it would be by RCA phono. Does that make any sense?

the tv might have to be turned on to accomplish everything that he wants if you used the tvs analog out.
