I have a Samsung 47 hdtv with an HDMI hookup. I have the Toshiba sd-5970 up convert dvd player (which is great except for the slow menu's) which i am using the HDMI cable. i recently got HD programming through Charter cable. When they hooked that up my only other inputs left were component video...I am wondering if the quality of component video is equal equal to HDMI????
thanks in advance

Yes D, the quality of component video is comparable to HDMI, I beleive (maybe a small difference for fixed pixel sets). If you have an upscale DVD player then you need to keep it to the HDMI input so you can "upscale" your DVD's. With an upscale player it only shows through the HDMI (or DVI) because HDMI (or DVI) is "all digital" transmission. If you were to hook up your upscale player to component you would only be able to output at 480p. If someone has an upscale DVD player hooked up to their TV through component cables, the upscale player won't upscale to 720/1080, and in that case there is no benefit of an upscale player over a non-upscale progressive DVD player.

A few that do are:
Zenith DVB318 (with older firmware)
Momitsu DVD-V880 and 880N
NeuNeo HVD108 and HVD208

Kdog, I was not aware of any upscale DVD players that display 720/1080 HD signals over component cables. Thanks for that info.
