Need advice from anyone ... will the Monster ($200+) voltage regulator or surge protector be helpful to protect damage to HDTV sets including VHS and DVD recorders possibly due to power outages? Salesman recommends it. Troubleshooting manual indicates damage may occur from outages too. Picture (at demo) also looked visibly better. Help!

You do need a surge protector but you may be able to get one cheaper. I do have the Monster one and I've had know problems with it.

A surge protector helps protect from power surges, not outages..

I doubt if either will protect you from outages since they cannot supply power; only a UPS can. What they say they will do is protect the device from voltage surges/spikes and they have some ability for this. However, there may be better alternatives, depending on your house wiring and your system.

I think Kathy meant that you can get a surge after an outage when the power comes back on

Go to any hardware/Radio Shack and buy a surge protector for a few dollars. Save your money.

Home Depot carries them also.

Looks like a bad link Ratman. It's giving a cookies disabled error for me on both browsers.

It's fixed now!

What the kid was talking about at Best Buy, was a Monster Power. A Power Conditioner, I cleans the AC noice from entering your home av equipment. And yes it does make a difference. Surge protectors you can buy for 10-25 dollars, and they don't do the same thing. And no this also isn't a Voltage Regulator. Monster has one of those also, and it sells for about $1200.

At $200, she's probably referring to this..

And no, it's not a power conditioner, it's a glorifed surge protector... The power conditioners start in the $500-$600 range.

If I was going to drop $200 on a surge protector, I'd get something with Series Mode protection like a Brickwall or similiar brand...

So if I was going out today and buying a SP for my new HDTV what should I buy. A good quality SP, or one with a power conditioner built in?

What is a power conditioner? Whatever the manufacturer says it is. The term has been used for anything from a single-MOV-protected extension cord to an AC regeneration system and everything in between, including UPS.

My suggestion is that you need some protection from AC spikes/surges but that you do not necessarily need filtering/conditioning unless there is a noise or signal problem to be cured. In any case, the best place for real surge/spike protection is at the breaker box.

Surge protector. yes
Power conditioner... probably not (unless you have a home and electrical service that's very bad.)

IMO, a UPS makes more sense if you want to spend $$.

I heard people say bad things about Monster cable products on this site before. They were right. A Monster Cable surge protector was creating havoc with my TV, DVR and amplifier. I bought a $49.99 Belkin surge protector and it's been working perfectly fine.

I have a UPS for my HT and my desktop computer. The last house I lived in had power problems and would drop voltage often. In my new house - I think the HT one has kicked on twice in 5 months, and just for a few seconds.
