I am reading through all the FAQ and guides to setup this box and got confused even more. If you could please enlighten me on just a few simple questions I am having trouble understanding:
1. What does all the different enable/disable formats in the adv setup do? 1080i,720,480pW,480pS,etc? What is best and most recomended?
2. Which option do you select in the Video format fixed/auto/etc? What does this do to the screen?
3. I have played with it and seem to notice that when certain ones are on/off my guide is either the whole screen or narrowed down like the channel it is on? Why does it do this?
I am running the SA8300 from the HDMI output to my TV HDMI input and it is a 16:9 ratio sony hdtv.

1: those options tell the box what your tv can display. When you do the tests it'll display the image on the TV, if you can't see it then don't press anything, it'll go back to normal after a while.
2: Fixed leaves it to whatever setting you want. It'll upconvert or downconvert the incoming signal to match whatever you set it as "fixed"
3: Watching Standard Definition (SD) on an HD tv will give you bars at the side. To alot of people aspect ratio is more important than filling the whole screen which is streched. HD programming is widescreen while SD isn't so that's why..

So if I choose all the formats in the setup (6 of them) to be on since I can see all of them, what is the suggestion of the choice for fixed, auto,up,etc? How do you keep the aspect ratio correct on the channels it is supposed to be after doing the setup?
Go to the "general setup guide" pdf in the SA STB FAQ. Read it, especially page 15, which explains the options.
Most people do not use fixed, especially if you want to stretch the SD channel signal on your TV. Probably best to use Auto HDMI.

Do you have a link to that ?
I thought you said you'd already read it...

the setup guide link is near the end. One of the other links is now dead, sorry, they keep changing it.

Because I find that my TV does a better display in Theater Wide 1 for 480i, in setup, I selected STANDARD for 480i and each time I change format from 1080i to 480i, the SD channel is widescreen in the best display. My TV does it better than the STB/DVR when using WIDE in setup.
But then I don't know what kind of HDTV you have...
