"A set that upconverts NTSC signals beyond 480P. Some TVs only upconvert 480i to 480P, while others upconvert to 540P, 960i, 1080i."
My Hitachi 51F510 has the option for 1080i or 540p. I do not notice any difference when viewing in either one of these on analog stations.

Thought I would notice a difference.
Am I doing something worng? Does it only work on certain programs?
The Sony KDP51WS655 has the same quality analog picture as the Hitachi, even when the Hitachi upconverts to 1080 or 540.

The difference between 540p or 1080i with standard definition is not going to make a huge difference IMO (YMMV). You're at the mercy of the source material.
Use what's satisfactory to your perception. There's no right or wrong.
I found the same difference with my TV and 480i material - very little. I found that 540P can appear a bit "smoother" on some material and 1080i can appear a little "crisper". I use 1080i, but if someone switched it to 540P on me, I don't know if I'd notice.
