sorry but there should be no difference in what you see OTA compared to what your getting from the cable co... they receive the programming just like anybody else so again there should be NO difference whatsoever in getting it from the cable co or OTA..... another thing you state you think youll get better HD service through satellite then cable you do realize once again dish, direct, and cable are all getting the same HD feed that your going to see whether its hbohd, showtimehd, discovery hd, espn hd...... etc..... the only reason to get satellite over cable is because of price.... some cable co. are higher then others but again you getting the same thing from whatever co... you go with...

Newbie here, but I was under the impression that the cable company does have the capability to compress the signal sent to the STB, in order to squeeze more channels into the bandwidth afforded by the wires. If so, depending on the CODEC used, you could end up with a picture of less quality than the original feed from the broadcaster. Similar to compressing audio files into MP3 format, you save space but lose quality. More channels is better marketing for the cable company than than havng a slightly sharper picture. More bandwidth i.e. highest PQ, can be allocated to certain channels, like DIscoveryHD, where the source material is gorgeous and really makes people notice. Bandwidth could even be allocated dynamically, so that the SUper Bowl gets better treatment than the local news does.

Digital stream, anything is possible.

phantoom200 - rate shaping is utilized for SD digital channels, where there are 8-12 SD channels per frequency, but not for HD channels (there are too few on each 6 MHz to do this).

Most Major cable companies "pass" the full 19.4 Mb/sec bandwidth for HD stations (putting 2 HD stations in each frequency). There are some service providers that are bandwidth limited and they may be putting 3 in that same space, but I don't believe the "majors" do this.

Also, bandwidth affects picture quality through the creation of macroblocking on scenes with movement. Scenes without much movement would appear "perfect".
