I've been told that pip will not work unless you have two different tuners for each picture?? is that true? I'm planning on buying a new tv but don't know if pip is worth it?

All pip/pop requires two tuners and always had that requirement.
Most all TV's today have the feature(s), with caveats.

It will not be obsolete and is only worth it to those that have that requirement.

Well obsolete in the case that cable/sat companies always stuff us with STBs! That way the box does the decoding and not the TV itself so non of those nice features i don't even use anymore. My TV has PIP/POP and i hardly use it cuz i don't have a second input or i can't view 2 channels with the box only sending the feed from the current channel. If the box would decode all channels and sent the whole stream to the TV then that be great but i doubt that'll ever happen.

You can currently use NTSC tuners for analog cable either from set or through a VCR/DVD player. Just need to split line prior to STB. If you get a set or tuner with QAM tuner you should be to do the same and more. IMO it's here to stay and will be improved upon perhaps.

My SA8X00HD does PiP just fine.

The place that the PiP gets done is simply changing. Same way CC must now be done by the STB (or ATSC Tuner) for HD.

PiP is a non-issue in the purchase of most TVs. Almost all TVs have PiP as one of their features.

I already said I have PiP in my SA8300HD - NOW!. The PiP is relatively small, but you can see the programme and I'm sure more PiP functionality will be built into future STBs (or you can connect two STBs to your HDTV if your HDTV allows two HD inputs PiP (Many do not)).

It will depend on how you get your service - from Cable, Sat or OTA.

Cable will have it in dual tuner DVRs, OTA will have it on TVs with PiP and built in ATSC Tuners, I'm not sure about Sat - that may be more difficult...

I have three TVs with double tuners and PIP features. I have never figured out how to use it simply because I have no use for the feature. It never did make sense to me to watch two things at the same time. And I am a multi tasker. I am in the middle of crunching numbers in a SQL database right now so I can complete an online survey and while waiting I pop over to post this response. But I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would watch two programs at the same time.

When the Pats and the Red Sox were playing on the same night it was a good enough reason for me. Also pretty cool to play a video game at the same time when entertaining freinds and perhaps watching a sporting event.

I have tried to watch more than one game at the local sports bars. I get a headache. Maybe it's the Bud Lights.

Also...I do not play video games.

Point is...each person has his own likes and dislikes. No way in heck are the TV manufacturers ever going to make custom TVs for each person's individual needs. PIP works for a lot of folks and they will contiunue to offer it to us technical morons who will never use it. I doubt it will ever become obsolete.

C'est la vie. I have a friend who is EXTREMELY non technical, but LOVES PIPing, while listening to a cd and talk radio. Guy must have scrambled eggs in his cranium....

That's different and not PIP...you are talking about listening to Audio from one source and Video from another.

If they could make the PIP in my SA8000HD not cause the STB to thrash to the point of being unusable (like when a PC runs out of memory) I'd use it more...

Sometimes I wish I could add more RAM to my 8000HD. Its seems like it's always swapping. It SOUNDS like it's swapping, grinding its page page or something. Maybe it's defragging its filesystems or I'm hearing the sound of buffing live TV, but the damn things really feels and sounds like a computer without enough memory.

When you have its PIP mode going, its unbearable.... (running Passport)

I have Fox News or Food Network in one PIP and the program I am watching on other PIP. During commercials I get news and views and never miss the show I am watching. I switch to full view after the breaks. TV nights fly by with no commercials.

armentage, see if you can upgrade to the SA8300HD. Some people in your area have.

Why would pip go obsolete? I use pip all the time on my tv's.
