View Full Version : How do I calibrate ALL of my HDTV inputs?

Something just occurred to me...it's fine and dandy to have my DVE and AVIA discs (FYI: not sure which I like better, both audio tests are primitive at best and the video stuff is over my head at this point), but how exactly do I use these to calibrate ALL the inputs on my Toshiba?

I know some of the fine-tuning will apply universally, but not all. I don't think using the DVD player through all the various inputs is viable, as the different sources tend to add their own flavor to the picture quality in addition to the TV's inputs.

What do you guys do? Just start with the DVD input and try to make the others look as good by eye, or is there a better method?

Use the same DVD player with component cables, then s-video, then composite, HDMI/DVI.

Same source and material each time.

Holy hole in a donut, Ratman, that was a fast response!!!

I'm guessing that's maybe the best I can do, and any differences attributable to coloration (for lack of a better term) from my STB, Xbox, etc will just have to be fine tuned manually...well, I suppose I could use the disc through the xbox...

Thanks.

Sorry to bump a really old post, but I have a similar problem.

I want to use Avia or DVE to calibrate my new Samsung Flat Panel LCD. I'm using HDMI for my STB, but how will I calibrate the HDMI input when my DVD player only has component outputs?

You probably can't... until you borrow/buy a DVD player with an HDMI output.

Or use the tests on HDNet or INHD. Check their online guides for exact times. Not sure if they are still on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, respectively.

hammie,

I'm assuming it's this "HDNET Test Pattern" that comes on from 6:00am-6:10am? I set it up to record tomorrow morning. Thank you that was very helpful. I had no idea they had that.

I have one of those. See the following thread. It works via your DVD player, same as the other setup DVDs. It's faster and more accurate, but doesn't handle some items like sharpness and is not really useful for the service menu calibrations that some people like to do.

I just recorded this test pattern, but I'm not sure what to do with it. It's just a pattern of colors.
