What doesn't look right?
What video board?
What PC?
What media (software) looks bad?
What resolutions/scan rates?

custom built computer.... 1080i looks terrrible you can barely see the lettering and the overscan is terrible... not on the tv itself just from the computer... its a asus video card with a nvidia chip... windows just looks bad altogether.. and the only resolution ive tried is 1920x1080i.... ive been trying to read up on this alot but there is soooo much stuff to read its kinda overwhelming..... i know it can work because ive seen many different pics of mits with a pc hooked up i guess its just messing with the settings in powerstrip to get it right but the only problem is knowing what settings to put it on...

Couple I found to try over at the powerstrip forums..
Timing recommendation #1.... 1920x540 at 60Hz
Modeline................ "1920x540" 74.250 1920 2008 2052 2200 540 542 547 562 +hsync +vsync
Timing recommendation #2.... 1920x1080 at 30Hz
Modeline................ "1920x1080" 74.250 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1094 1124 interlace +hsync +vsync
Just taking a stab at it, let me know if these work at all.

Mikehbkwm,
Before diving into powerstrip and all it’s possible resolutions make sure you have the most up to date graphics driver. The new graphic drivers offer HDTV suport thru DVI using the NVIDIA control panel thus eliminating the use of powerstrip for this cards. Have you tried tweeking the NVIDIA control panel? Look at the following links and use them as reference.

Ok, we've been messing around with powerstrip, and can't find where to input these time modes. We've found where to input custom resolutions, but a lot of that stuff confuses us. Is there a file where we put them in?
Also, we downloaded the lated nvidia drivers, and the option to set custom time options isn't where it should be. The website says it only works on cards with external TMDS. We have no idea what that means. The video card in question is an ASUS-made Geforce FX5200.
Have you seen these?

TMDS is the serial protocol to transmit the signal over DVI (transition minimized differential signaling) created by Silicon Image.
The problem with the integrated TMDS transmitter on NVIDIA cards is that it runs at too low of a clock speed to support higher resolutions. Therefore, NVIDIA addressed the problem by outfitting their cards with a second external TMDS transmitter which is manufactured by Silicon Image. This is what the website is referring to when they mention an external TMDS transmitter. Newer Nvidia cards will have this, but not necessarily all third party manufactures will include this in their graphics board. So in all likely hood ASUS has not included this external TMDS transmitter on it’s board for that specific model since you can't access the advance timing page.
So I’m assuming you had no luck with the included software/control panel provided by ASUS. The following link http://www.digitalconnection.com/support/cliffnotes_17.asp is meant to show what you are asking on how to go about entering the timing strings into Powerstrip. A heads up! Those timing strings in all probability may not necessarily be the ones you want.

yeah this whole thing isnt looking to good anymore ive been messing with this for hours... and in 480p it looks great but there is wayyyy to much overscan and i cant change it for some reason... and in 1080i it pretty much fills the screen correctly buttt everything is to small to see am i basically SOL.... the only other thing i can think of doing is getting a vga to component adapter which is what everyone seems to have but im using DVI and you would think it wouldnt matter which you use...

This probably won't help you but out of curiosity, have you gone in the control panel and clicked on 'appearance and themes', click 'change the computers theme', click the 'appearence' tab, down to the bottom to 'font size', change to 'extra large fonts'? You said it fits the screen but the font was too small. Maybe this will help?

Are you running any of the hacks for your nvidia card? I have 2 on mine - can't remember what they are off the top of my head - but they give you way more options than what are standard in the control panel.

Mike,
You should step up to at least, a 6600 gt/ultra or 6800 gt/ultra.
Or the radeon equal.
I dont even know if you can pull it off with on a low end card like that without a transcoder.
I did it with powerstrip on my old 5700 Its got dvi but i never tried it,everyone kept saying "you need a transcoder". so i bought it and used it.
Overscan wasnt a big deal, i think it was on 1152x720pi just had to move it to the left a little using powerstrip controls and it worked.
All and all its a real big headache, seems like you always need your monitor around cause somthing wont show up on the t.v. like games, then you have to go change the video settings in the games on the monitor and then its always somthing else, like i could never get powerstrip to save my settings or profiles.
so i would end up booting on the monitor then swithing to the t.v. in the end its all CRAP!!
As of now im building a new p.c.about 4 weeks away from being finished i will give it one more try with my new 6800 gt,ill use the seetings on nvidia contol panel not power strip, ill try it with transcoder then dvi, just to see what happens. If that dont work ? ill say screw it an fork out $700 for that new sony lcd ive been drooling over at the local comp usa.
So basically? I KNOW YOUR PAIN!!!!!!!
EDIT= you using driver 71.84?

Mits 1080i TV's sweetspot is 1776x1000i w/ 37.75 scan rate. Set that up w/ powersrtip. 960x540 at 37.75hz is also good but not HD.
Do not use DVI. Not HTPC friendly. A lot of people are having trouble w/ custom resolutions w/ DVI on an analog TV. I use a 9800PRO/Mits 65-411 hooked by a VGA to
RGBHV cable. DVI to my Fujitsu 17"WS LCD monitor. (dual display) No need for any transcoders or the ATI component adapter. Very little overscan.
Text will be tiny and shimmers. Interlaced displays can't resolve text this small so that ok. Your 5200 may be the weakest link once your done. Good luck!

Hey mike, i got it working!!
I'm using dvi and the nvidia drivers 71.84.
No powerstrip!.....No transcoder! Not very difficult!
1126x633=720p on my 34 inch vega.
Im so stoked!!!!!Finally gonna get rid of that beastly desk!!
There are new drivers out ill give them a try soon.
