I have a Hitachi 57F510, TWC SA8000HD STB. I had them connected with a DVI to HDMI cable. Well today my box screwed up so TWC brought out the SA8300HD STB and it has HDMI output.
The question is can I get a HDMI to DVI adapter and still use my cable that I have? I would like to know if the audio will work?
To better explain the connection I want to try it'll be STB out HDMI to DVI with an adapter then DVI to HDMI with the wire to input on the HDMI to the TV.
I hope this makes since and I get some good answers because I'll order the adapter on Ebay tonight.

DVI is video only. You need an HDMI to HDMI cable to carry the audio.

So using the adapter will give me video but no audio?
The adaptor would give you only video (if it works) since DVI doesn't carry audio. You could then connect analogue (and/or digital) audio to your TV or A/V Receiver as necessary.
You should likely get an appropriate HDMI cable - see the FAQ on DVI/HDMI information - it shouldn't be that expensive and you may be able to sell yours.
The reason I say "if it works" is because you don't want too many adaptors/connectors in a digital connection.

Actually, if you go from HDMI to DVI to HDMI, audio WILL be carried through.
It is absolutely correct that the DVI standard does not support audio and the HDMI standard does. However, the audio portion of HDMI is encoded with the video signal on the same wires. The audio is simply "unpacked" by the receiving chipset at the sink end of the setup.
With this in mind, if you go from HDMI to DVI and back to HDMI, the audio will be received by the sink.
However, the audio portion of HDMI is encoded with the video signal on the same wires.
Do you have a link to the pinout on the HDMI connector? I cannot seem to find it. Not agreeing or disagreeing, just like to see it. You've got me curious now :)
Same for the HDMI standard. They want you to sign up as a manufacturer to be able to download it from Silicon Image. Big secret I guess :)
Thanks,
