View Full Version : How about VGA to HDMI?

Am I missing something or is it that simple? A cable that goes VGA to HDMI...will that work between my laptop and TV with an HDMI input? I would still need to run an audio cable cuz the VGA doesn't put out audio. Do they make a cable that has VGA and Audio on one end that goes to HDMI?
Thinking I already know the answer, but asking nontheless.

One's digital, one's analog. You cannot just convert the signals by an adapter cable.
You might find a transcoder on the web somewhere, but even if you were to find one, I'd bet it would be quite expensive.

The easier route would be a VGA to component transcoder.

So VGA is analog? That's what I thought, but something recently led me to believe it was capable of digital by modifying the registry in Windows. Now I have to backtrack and find that document.

There's nothing you can do on your PC to start making your video card output VGA digitally, there is no digital VGA format. If you get a video card with a DVI-D output on it, you could use that with a DVI to HDMI conversion cable.

How about VGA to DVI-A to HDMI?
Analog will pass through the HDMI cable, won't it? My TV says the HDMI is DVI compatable.
I'm not even trying to find a short cut anymore. I just want to understand all this. My brain is fried right now so any further posts from me today may sound silly. Maybe I should close the door to my office and take a nap.

Again, the cable can't do the conversion from analog to digital. The problem with the DVI format is it can be analog, digital, or both where HDMI only supports digital. The only DVI that works with a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable is DVI-D

The cable suppliers don't tell you that. LOL

If it was a desktop computer it is better and cheaper to buy a video card with a DVI out as opposed to a anaglo to digital converter (probably the cost of a low end computer).
Kinda stuck with a laptop though.
Does the set have a VGA in?

Check your laptop to see if it has an S video output....many do.

Toss the laptop for one with a DVI connector...
DVI-D -> HDMI is a piece of cake....
I hate to plug Apple but I know their PowerBooks have DVI connectors.

a few of teh dell laptops also have a dvi connectors. (inspiron 9300 and the gen xp2)
but ya... otherwise the quality that comes out of the s-video on laptops to the hdmi has two problems.. one it can't support widescreen view..
and secondly the quality is very poor!

Lots of brands also offer a port replicator or docking station, on which you would find extra connectors such as a DVI connector.
So maybe the best way to go would be to check if your type and brand offers a port replicator with a DVI-D output.
If so, you could get one of those, and then simply get a DVI -> HDMI adapter cable.
I 'm actually in the same situation as you are, my "HD Prepared" TV is about to arrive (Philips 32PW9552), and this CRT actually accepts component and HDMI.
Even though my laptop has S-Video and VGA, I 'm dying to see what the result would be via DVI => HDMI.
The only trouble : it is not my laptop, but owned by the company, but I am free to take it with me when I go home.
The docking station that I have at the company does offer DVI, but I 'm not sure which one it is (DVI-D, DVI-A, ...)
Since there 's very little job security these days, who knows, I might get fired in a couple of months.
And what would I do with such a specific port replicator in that case, eh ?
But hey, it you own the laptop, this might be the ideal solution.

Even for what they want for the cheaper box, one could get a new ATI chipset video card w/ a ATI adapter and have almost the same thing.
