Would this help improve my picture, performing similarly to those expensive power conditioners? I have an extra one of these laying around the house and want to know if you would help any? :guiny:

Nope - it will just help with power sags.

A UPS does just that in most cases. Nothing more than a battery backup.
Some UPS's may also provide some type of power conditioning. YMMV
A 'power conditioner' alternatively may not provide a UPS function.
Do any help with improving picture quality? No (assuming your home is wired correctly)
All a power conditioner may do is remove some EMI/RFI interference if it already exists. And... IMO, if you have bad power, fix it. Don't mask it with an expensive 'band aid'.
Hello,
As someone in the UPS industry that whole "if you have bad power fix it" is not always something a person can fix. Many times it’s the utility power coming into your house. Trust me if the utility power was great, my company wouldn't be traded on the stock market. It is true that your picture would not improve, but your equipment will operate at a higher level and last longer. Components will wear out quicker if you have brown outs and sags on a consistent basis. I notice more with my receiver then anything else. Also some UPS's do have power conditioning incorporated. The link is something that we are just putting out, and by no means is this something that everyone should have, but it’s pretty damn nice if you ask me. I like that it even looks like a piece of A/V equipment. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email and I will try to get as much information as I can. Also please note that the price will seem higher then it would be because it’s list price. You could buy this cheaper through a distributor or a reseller of APC products. Now if you have great clean power a surge protector will be fine, but you will see increased performance and longevity with a piece of equipment like this one below.

I'm not saying anyone's wrong or right. But in my experience, I've been in my home for 27 years. Knob and tube wiring (except for the TV and A/V equipment) and 100 amp service.
Squirrels have shorted out step down transformers, trees/snow/wind have killed power numerous times over the years. I've never had any problems. Maybe I'm lucky.
IMO... a UPS is probably a good thing to have just in case as an added level of comfort for 'extra' added protection. Especially now perhaps for those that have expensive lamps in their TV's that require a cool down period at power down.

I hadn't thought of the power-down fan, Ratman. That along makes it worth the price of admission.
Good point about the lamps, I have never even thougt about that. To me the most important thing about these products is the power conditioning and voltage regulating. Those two things are what you will get the most use out of. Again in most cases a UPS is not needed. I will say that I do feel better when the power goes off and I can gracefully shut down my A/V equipment though.
Mjones: if you let me know the s/n I can tell if they died before they should have and if so you might get them free. I mostly work with large UPS's for data centers, but being a A/V guy I love that we saw the need and came out with a cool product.
Just so you know, APC have always done right by me.
Bought the first unit many years ago (Office 350). There was a recall and they sent me a new unit about 2 years after my purchase.
Bought the second unit about 2 years ago (Office 500) and had "battery no good" issues. APC sent a new battery but that didn't solve the issue, so a circuit must have been bad and they then sent me a whole new unit.
The CSRs have always been excellent. Probably one of the best companies with which I've dealt.

Thank you for the kind words, I can truly say this is the best company I have ever worked for in terms of the customer and trying to do things the right way. APC also makes some inovative products and puts forth a ton of money in R&D. We have this new product called the bi-pod and it can read your thumb print and remembers all of your passwords. I don't know about you guys but I have tons of passwords to enter and remember. This thing is tiny also and only costs 49.99. I am going to get one for myself. By the way here is the link:
