I was on the computer and the family ws watching a DVDyesterday about 4PM and the power went out (we have had ALOT of rain/wind lately). Figured oK just work on some of my models. Over 2hours later, it was getting dark. The kids were getting hungry. There was a definite chill in the air as well.

I head to the garage and unwind a 100' extension cord, plug it in my inverter I have on my bucket truck, started the truck, and for the next 6 1/2 hours, we were the only ones in the subdivision (AFAIK) watching DVD's in 5.1, to freshly popped, hot, buttered popcorn :overclap: .

Used a tad over 1/8th of a tank of gas but it was worth it! (Oh yeah. We had cold sandwhiches for dinner!

Last time we had power out (the 50 Million people one, about 1.5 years ago) I barbequed dinner. Then we sat on the porch, drank a beer and looked at the stars like I'd only seen them up north.

Mine went out last wek for a day (new home transfer power from old) and I asked my new neighbor if I could string an extension cord for my "refrigerator".

I had the PC, TV, DVD, and Frig running. I rock.

I have a transfer switch wired so I can plug my 5.5 kw onan in my camper into the main power panel and viola...power for half the house (the half with the TV, fridge and microwave).

When we do have a power outage I usually end up in the RV where I always have cold beer anyhow. Maybe I should just move the entertainment center out there.

The only thing I have in case of a power outage is my looting list....

My last bucket had an Onan. PITA to keep maintained but i still miss all that power. Inverters while perfect for small jobs, are no match for a real generator.

How big is that inverter, Splicer?

I have a 3,000 watt (6000 peak) that is tied into three 27 class 12 volt batteries. It will power my refridgerator and microwave...but no way will it run those pluss my AC. It runs the AC unit on my RV though.

There are inverters that will do the big jobs...but they are expensive and require large battery banks. My buddy has a setup in his cabin that is solar and wind powered. His inverter runs everything in his cabin. Including his 60 inch Wega and satalite dish.

It is a large inverter I have. Only 1 battery bank though. Thats why I let the engine run. Otherwise the thing would die in half hour or so. I have a big inverter. Honestly don't know the wattage, it is about 13 years or so old. I think it is a 2-3000 watts. I know it did a fine job running the 51" HDTV, 5.1 sound, powered sub, cable box, AND a small ceramic heater. The heater is what drew all the power though. You have this stuff. You know what I'm talking about.
