Does anyone know of a brans that has the long play mode.
All I can find are models with SP & EP.
Any movie over 2 hours looks like crap in EP.
Thanks.

EP and LP are basically the same thing one means Ext Play the other means Long Play from what I understand...
There are no LP VCRs any more. Haven't been for a long time. The new VCRs can play this "4 hour" mode, however, they cannot record in LP any more. Only SP & EP.
Suggest you get an S-VCR for better quality in EP. JVC makes them starting at about $120, but only the more expensive ones look really good because they have extra noise cancelling circuitry. You'd be amazed at what a good S-VHS deck looks like, when compared to a cheap regular VCR. Most people don't want to spend the money though.
S-VHS gives 400 lines vs 230 or so on regular VHS.

57U - How are tapes recorded on std vcr work on an s-vcr.
And what price point do I need to go to to get the better noise reduction you spoke of.
Thanks.
You can play standard tapes on an S-VCR, but not the other way around. Standard tapes sometimes look better on a better machine because of the "noise reduction" I spoke of.
The "better" machines probably cost $250+.
Remember that VCRs are a "dying" technology and will likely be replaced by PVRs for "time shifting". They also can't tape HD, of course, unless you buy the expensive D-VHS deck for $750.

Also, you can record on a standard tape and play back on any vcr . If you record on a S-VHS tape you get a better picture but can't play it back on a standard vcr.
Most S-VCRs allow you to record S-VHS format on regular tape (the better the tape, the better the picture quality). JVC call it "ET" technology. This also will not play on a regular VCR.
It's similar to recording D-VHS format on an S-VHS tape (with appropriate holes). It works, but may not last as long, or be quite as good regarding dropouts.
